Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik gave his thoughts on Malik Willis

Despite the Miami Dolphins moving on from head coach Mike McDaniel following the 2025 season, the team will likely run a similar offense as they promoted senior passing game coordinator Bobby Slowik to offensive coordinator.

Slowik, who previously held the offensive coordinator role for the Houston Texans for two seasons, is also a member of the Shanahan tree as he worked under Kyle Shanahan with the San Francisco 49ers prior to joining the Texans. 

With Houston, Slowik had success in his first season, helping quarterback C.J. Stroud win the Rookie of the Year award in 2023. Now, Slowik will hope to have similar success with new Dolphins quarterback Malik Willis.

Miami Dolphins Offensive Coordinator Speaks on Malik Willis

Despite Willis being a four-year NFL veteran, he has only started six games throughout his career. Prior to joining the Dolphins, Willis spent two seasons with the Tennessee Titans before being traded to the Green Bay Packers, where he served as Jordan Love’s backup for two seasons.

For the first time in his career, Willis is expected to lead an NFL franchise. And his new offensive coordinator has shared his feelings on the quarterback. Slowik said, “Really talented individual. Can spin the ball all over the field, throw the ball everywhere. Can run obviously, can use his legs. He’s tough. But honestly what I’ve enjoyed the most so far is getting to know him.”

While Willis remains an uncertainty because of his lack of experience, the ceiling is high as a result of his raw talent. Regarding Willis’ dual-threat ability, Slowik said “I’d say anytime you have a quarterback who has the ability to run, it’s not something that you are going to do down-in, down-out in the NFL, but the threat of it makes it 11 versus 11, as opposed to 11 on 10. I think that’s what can get tough sometimes when you get a guy that maybe isn’t as mobile at quarterback is, they have 11 guys and aside from throwing the ball, you’re really playing with 10. So it just lets you equalize some advantageous situations.”

With Willis, the Dolphins may have a true mobile quarterback for the first time in franchise history. The current franchise leader among quarterbacks in rushing yards is Ryan Tannehill, who averaged 13.8 rushing yards per game with the Dolphins. With the Packers, Willis averaged 58 rushing yards in his three starts.

Regarding his mobility, Slowik added, “The mobility these days shows up more in off-schedule situations than it does anything. So it’s definitely a weapon and it’s a threat and it’s something you want a defense to think about, but I think no one in the NFL is coming out and just living in that world.”

Willis will be joining De’Von Achane, who had a career-best 1,350 rushing yards in 2025 which led to his contract extension. Willis’ dual-threat ability would give the offense an added element in the running game that it did not have with former quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
