Eagles’ Vic Fangio Provides Long-Term Update on Coaching Future

The Philadelphia Eagles can officially stop worrying about losing defensive coordinator Vic Fangio anytime soon.

After months of speculation surrounding Fangio’s future and possible retirement, the veteran defensive mastermind made it crystal clear during Eagles OTAs that he is not planning to walk away from football.

“I’m good for two years at least,” Fangio told reporters Thursday.

For an Eagles team trying to bounce back after a disappointing finish to the 2025 season, that statement may have been one of the biggest offseason developments yet.

Fangio, 67, admitted he thinks about retirement every offseason. However, he emphasized on Thursday that he was “never close” to actually stepping away from coaching.

“Reverse aging” Vic Fangio isn’t going anywhere soon 😂

The Eagles defensive coordinator cleared up some offseason rumors as the Birds get set for OTAs.

“I’ve had those thoughts the last few years,” Fangio said. “Every year at the end of the year, I just think about it. I never really got serious to where I would’ve done it.”

The longtime coordinator even joked that doctors recently told him he was “reverse aging” during his annual physical.

“I told the players you guys are stuck with me for a long while,” Fangio added.

That is exactly what Eagles fans wanted to hear.

Fangio Has Become the Backbone of Eagles Defense

Since arriving in Philadelphia in 2024, Fangio has completely transformed the Eagles defense into one of the NFL’s elite units.

Over the last two seasons, the Eagles have allowed the second-fewest points in football while also ranking near the top of the league in total defense, passer rating allowed and yards per play.

Philadelphia finished top five in scoring defense in both seasons under Fangio, marking the franchise’s first back-to-back top-five finishes since the early 2000s under legendary coordinator Jim Johnson.

That consistency became even more important last season as the Eagles offense struggled to find rhythm following their Super Bowl championship campaign.

Fangio’s defense often carried the team.

Now, Philadelphia will once again lean heavily on the veteran coordinator as the franchise navigates major changes elsewhere on the coaching staff.

The Eagles are entering another season with a new offensive coordinator after hiring Sean Mannion, while longtime offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland also departed the organization.

Keeping Fangio in place gives head coach Nick Sirianni some much-needed continuity entering a pivotal season.

Eagles DC Vic Fangio says he ‘wasn’t close’ to retiring this offseason. Says he told his players ‘you’re stuck with me for awhile.’

Stated he’s good for at least two more years.

Eagles Defense Will Look Different in 2026

Even with Fangio returning, Philadelphia’s defense will not look exactly the same this season.

The Eagles lost several important contributors in free agency, including Nakobe Dean and Reed Blankenship, while Fangio also revealed a potentially major role adjustment for All-Pro defensive back Cooper DeJean.

According to Fangio, DeJean is expected to see snaps at safety in the team’s base defense packages after spending most of last season dominating as a nickel corner.

The defensive coordinator acknowledged there will be adjustments throughout the roster, but he made one thing very clear: he still loves coaching.

“I still like doing it,” Fangio said. “I like the challenge of the job. I like the group of guys we have. I work for a good organization.”

As long as Fangio still feels that way, the Eagles appear more than happy to keep one of the NFL’s most respected defensive minds on the sideline for the foreseeable future.
