Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer detailed how New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel addressed his players Monday before speaking out publicly on the Dianna Russini controversy Tuesday.

New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel finally addressed his photos with former NFL insider Dianna Russini publicly in a surprise press conference Tuesday. But before that, Vrabel spoke to his players about the controversy.

Vrabel told reporters about his address to the team, which occurred Monday. Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer provided more details Monday evening about what Vrabel said in private to his team.

“My understanding is that he led with it, as he stood in front of them Monday, quickly apologizing for bringing unwanted attention to the team,” wrote Breer. “He promised that he’d make it right and do all he could to put the focus back on the players.

“To those in the room, he came off as genuine and remorseful, and maybe most of all, relatable.”

It was the beginning of what a lot of analysts and fans would call damage control for Vrabel.

Page Six published photos of Vrabel and Russini at a luxurious resort hotel in Sedona, Arizona on April 7. The pictures occurred the week of the NFL’s annual league meetings in Phoenix.

The photos depicted the Patriots head coach and NFL insider holding hands, hugging and lounging in a pool.

In his first reaction to the release of the photos, Vrabel called the pictures “laughable.” He had a much different tone Tuesday.

Vrabel had not appeared in front of reporters or released a statement on the photos for two weeks. But Tuesday, he surprised the media with a press conference two days before the 2026 NFL Draft.

“I understand I could have addressed you guys sooner, but it was important to me to have a conversation with the players, which I did yesterday, very candidly as we began our offseason program, which everyone is excited to be a part of,” Vrabel told reporters. “Stacey had mentioned the players’ availability and it was never my intention to have them speak with you or address you before I did, so I asked him to come today and talk with you…

“With that being said, I’ve had some difficult conversations with people that I care about, with my family, the organization, the coaches, the players. Those have been positive and productive. We believe in order to be successful on and off the field you have to make good decision. That includes me. That starts with me. We never want our actions to negatively effect the team. We never want to be the cause of a distraction. And those are comments and questions that I’ve answered with the team and we’ll keep those private, to ourselves.

The New England Football Journal’s Kevin J. Stone posted a video of Vrabel’s entire statement on the subject to his X account.

Reaction to Vrabel’s First Public Address Since Controversial Photos Emerged

Initial reaction to Vrabel’s Tuesday response was that he indirectly admitted to wrongdoing. Sports media personality Jim Rome really took him to task just hours after his press conference.

“Vrabel basically just admitted it without admitting it,” wrote Rome on X as a video caption.

While a sound argument, one could also argue just being with Russini in a private setting was not appropriate.

The photos caught the Patriots head coach doing that. So, Vrabel didn’t really have a choice but to admit to some kind of wrongdoing.

Unless he wanted to provide full details of what happened, which wouldn’t be to his benefit, he was always going to have to make a statement of accountability. Even if that meant leaving it up to interpretation what he was holding himself accountable for.

The initial backlash was strong on social media Tuesday. But Vrabel and the Patriots could now begin placing this controversy in the rearview mirror.

“The fact that he immediately took accountability with the players, at the first point he had them all together, was always going to be the right thing to do,” concluded Breer. “And now, even if Vrabel can’t personally, his players can start to move past this.”
