The Orlando Magic made it official on Monday: Head Coach Jamahl Mosley has been fired.

The dismissal came just one day after the Magic blew a 3-1 series lead and fell to the Detroit Pistons in Game 7.

It was the kind of collapse that leaves organizations with no choice but to act. Here is how the NBA world responded.

The news broke quickly across social media: “BREAKING: The Orlando Magic have dismissed head coach Jamahl Mosley, sources tell ESPN. Mosley’s tenure in Orlando finishes after five seasons, including three consecutive playoff runs from 2023 to 2026. Orlando had a first-round elimination for the third straight time Sunday,” as per ESPN’s Shams Charania.

GettyNBA world shared its thoughts on firing Magic head coach Jamahl Mosley

NBA insider Brett Siegel was among the first to report the news and its aftermath. Siegel wrote:

“Jamahl Mosley is out as the Magic’s head coach following the team’s blown 3-1 lead to the Pistons and ongoing frustrations between him and Paolo Banchero, sources told ClutchPoints. Former Bulls HC Billy Donovan is already being linked to the Magic.”

NBA reporter Evan Sidery shed more light on the coaching search, reporting that Donovan could have his eye on more than one destination:

“The Magic’s top head coach target is Billy Donovan. While Orlando will make an aggressive push after firing Jamahl Mosley, Donovan could stall another week or two to see how the Knicks do in the next round. Orlando and New York appear to be Donovan’s preferred landing spots.”

NBA columnist Joe Cowley called it anything but a surprise, noting this had been coming for a while:

“Mosley firing was the worst kept secret of the NBA season. Reported last month that Bulls ownership coveted keeping Billy Donovan but feared all along the pending opening in Orlando would be too big a draw. Now, the only question is does Donovan want to do it or take a year off?”

One fan noted the obvious momentum surrounding Donovan’s name, writing:

“I already see the tea leaves Billy Donovan is in place to be the Orlando Magic next head coach.”

An analyst and fan account also framed this as a tough morning for Orlando:

“A tough blow to Magic’s morning. They have fired their coach and they are looking for Billy Donovan who was Bulls coach earlier to lead them into next season. Magic were doing great under him but problem was they weren’t having deep playoff runs. 3 consecutive first round elimination for him in playoffs.”

Another fan kept it simple and confident on where Donovan ends up:

“Lowkey I’d put money on Billy Donovan going to Orlando. Idk if the Magic want to chance on an assistant/college coach.”

New York Knicks reporter Steve Popper shared his thoughts on this move with:

“Have heard rumors of this coming for months with Billy Donovan and Thibodeau mentioned as possible replacements from every rumor about it. The coach blaming remains one of the oddest parts of the NBA (and every sport).”

Not everyone is sold on the Donovan hire, however. One Magic fan expressed clear concern about the direction of the search:

“Not a fan of this move. The only hope now is to hope he prioritizes shooting and actually cast a wide net in regards to the coaching search and don’t settle for the Michigan coach has not coached in the NBA or Billy Donovan burned the magic before and has not had any real success.”

A Magic podcast host agreed that the bar should be higher, suggesting Orlando aim for bigger names before settling:

“I don’t think he’s a bad coach, I also just don’t think he’s the one to go with especially since we need a proven winner in the playoffs even if they haven’t won a chip, I’d look at Mike B, Tom T, Steve K if he becomes available first before Donovan.”

Fantasy and NBA fan account Commish Eric quoted analyst Jeff Goodman’s take, which painted Donovan as a natural fit for this young core:

“That would be a good hire. Donovan would make perfect sense for the young Magic.” — echoing Goodman’s point about Donovan’s fit alongside Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, and his Florida family ties.

The NBA world is clearly divided with some see Donovan as the perfect match for Orlando’s young stars, while others want the Magic to think bigger in their search.
