Sunscreen is one of the most important parts of any skincare routine. But with chatter online regarding mineral (physical) sunscreens versus chemical sunscreens, it makes sense that you'd wonder which is right for you.
We connected with board-certified dermatologist Dr. Anetta Reszk to break down the difference and advise which is best.
Now that you understand the difference between mineral and chemical sunscreens, you're likely wondering which is better. The truth is one isn't inherently more effective than the other. According to Dr. Reszk, "Both can provide excellent protection when formulated well and applied properly." Ultimately, the better option depends on your skin type and personal preferences.
"Physical sunscreen is best suited for sensitive skin, rosacea-prone skin, post-procedure skin, and patients with inflammatory skin conditions," says Dr. Resk.
On the other hand, "Chemical sunscreen is best suited for normal, combination, and oily skin types, particularly for patients who prefer sheer, lightweight formulas that do not feel heavy or occlusive."
If a white cast is your main concern, opt for chemical or tinted mineral sunscreens, advises Dr. Resk.
Dr. Reszk describes this celebrity-loved SPF as "A lightweight, zinc oxide–based sunscreen that is particularly well suited for acne- and rosacea-prone skin, with a tinted option that helps minimize white cast while calming and protecting sensitive skin."
Available in three flexible shades, this tinted mineral sunscreen won't leave white cast and provides extra coverage (no foundation needed). The non-greasy formula effortlessly blends into the skin leaving behind a dewy glow.
This silky sunscreen quickly absorbs into the skin and feels like a lightweight moisturizer. It's formulated with UVA and UVB blocking zinc oxide, moisturizing vitamin E, and DNA repairsomes to reverse sun damage.
According to Dr. Reszk, this is "A high-SPF sunscreen that offers strong, reliable protection in a smooth, moisturizing texture suitable for both face and body."
This Korean sunscreen won't pill or clog pores, making it a great choice for beneath makeup and acne-prone skin. It contains soothing cica, hydrating green tea, and nourishing sunflower seed oil.
Dr. Resk suggests this "completely transparent, weightless formula that blends seamlessly into the skin and works especially well under makeup.
Protect your skin with Korean sunscreens that hydrate, brighten and melt right in.
