Lauren Sánchez Bezos Lost 2 Lbs. Before Met Gala With Fireman Workout
Lauren Sánchez Bezos delivered with her homage to a scandal.
In honor of the 2026 Met Gala’s “Fashion Is Art” dress code, the former journalist worked with Schiaparelli designer Daniel Roseberry on a look that was inspired by John Singer Sargent’s controversial 1883 painting “Madame X.” The portrait scandalized audiences at the time with its depiction of socialite Madame Pierre Gautreau’s bejeweled strap falling off her shoulder—so much so that Sargent repainted it with the strap upright.
It was exactly that detail that appealed to Sánchez Bezos, who told Vogue she was drawn to the painting after learning “particularly how a small detail, like the fallen jeweled strap, once sparked such a strong public reaction.”
“When you stand in front of it now, you see a beautiful woman. For me, the image represents how fashion and cultural standards can shift over time,” the 56-year-old continued. “Today, a strap is a strap, but back when ‘Madame X’ was painted by Sargent, a strap was a scandal.”
So, when it came to her midnight blue Schiaparelli gown for the “Costume Art”-themed benefit May 4, she said Roseberry “took the spirit of the gown painted by Sargent and made something entirely his own.”
“The silhouette nods to the painting, and the pearl-and-crystal straps are a quiet reference to the originals,” Sánchez Bezos explained, “but everything else is Daniel. His craftsmanship is breathtaking.” (See all the stars at the Met Gala here.)

But the philanthropist—who along with husband Jeff Bezos was an honorary co-chair—did have one request for the outfit: that it highlight her waist.
“That might’ve been the one direction that I gave Daniel,” she said. “I was like, ‘Let’s do a waist.’”

And Sánchez Bezos is no stranger to sartorial scandal herself, especially after she received backlash for her look at President Donald Trump’s 2025 Inauguration: a low cut white bustier top paired with a matching blazer and pants.
But she took the comments in stride, subtly clapping back at haters by liking comments on a since-deleted Instagram post from the time, including one that stated, “Girl you ate that inaugural look don’t pay attention to no haters.”
