Inside Princess Diana’s Niece Lady Eliza Spencer’s Engagement Party
Charles Spencer has found his happiness.
Almost 30 years after Princess Diana tragically lost her life, her brother Charles, 9th Earl Spencer, married archaeologist Cat Jarman on May 15.
“We both feel so incredibly lucky to have progressed from being colleagues, to friendship, to deep love and connection,” Cat and Charles shared in a statement with People. “Each stage of our relationship has been underpinned by laughter and we share a passion for life.”
And indeed, the pair first became acquainted in 2021 when Charles—whose marriage to Cat marks his fourth—was tapped to review her nonfiction book River Kings. Cat holds a PhD in archaeology, which she earned from the University of Bristol in 2017, and specializes in Viking history.
From there, Cat, 43, and Charles, 61, continued to collaborate on archaeological digs and began to co-host the podcast The Rabbit Hole Detectives before confirming their relationship had turned romantic in 2024.
The couple’s nuptials—which occurred just months after the Earl and his third wife Karen Spencer finalized their divorce—took place in Sedona, Arizona, with Cathedral Rock acting as the backdrop for their wedding photos.
For the occasion, Cat wore a sleeveless light blue dress which she styled with metallic heels. She wore her blonde hair in a braided crown around her head and held a bouquet of white roses in her hands. At her side, Charles donned a simple dark suit which he styled with a blue button down, left open at the collar.
Following the confirmation of their romance in 2024, Charles—who between them are parents to nine kids, Cat mom to two sons and Charles dad to seven children—reflected on what made their relationship work.

“Cat is completely different to anyone I have been with before,” Charles told the Daily Mail in November 2024. “With her I don't pretend to be anything I am not. She knows exactly who I am—and who I am not. She brings out the best in me.”
As for Cat, who was born in Norway, her life with Charles on his 13,000-acre estate Althorp marked a different lifestyle than she was accustomed to.
“I come from a country where we don't have any of this,” she told the outlet. “We don't have an aristocracy, really. Even the royal family in Norway—no one cares about them very much. It's very strange to be living here. I'm a normal person plonked in an abnormal world.”
And when it came to whether she’ll adopt the title of “Countess,” one that is now hers should she choose it, she expressed a similar apathy.
“I already have titles I have earned: my PhD and my professorship,” she said. “Where would the countess go in that? And I wouldn't want to give them up. I've worked hard for them.”

And while Cat only shares the occasional glimpse of her life with Charles on social media, she has reflected on how he’s supported her in her health journey after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2016.
In fact, after attending an event for the MS Society UK in May 2025, Cat spoke to her experience with the disease.
“I’ve been one of the lucky ones as I was diagnosed at a time when hard-hitting drugs had become available, meaning disease progression can usually be halted,” she wrote on Instagram. “But it’s still an extremely challenging illness to live with.”
Which is why, she added, “I’m exceptionally lucky to have a wonderful network around me and especially @charles.earl.spencer, who is the most supportive partner I could possibly hope for.”
