What Euphoria Cast and Creator Sam Levinson Have Said About Possible Season 4
Gabrielle Chung · 2026-06-01 · via E! Online (US) - Top Stories

Euphoria’s Sam Levinson Reveals Inspiration Behind "Horrific” Season 3 Death

Has Euphoria finally come to an end? That's the question on fans' minds after the season three finale.

After all, the fate of the beloved HBO show—starring ZendayaSydney Sweeney, Hunter Schafer, Alexa DemieMaude Apatow and Jacob Elordi—already looked precarious when it took a yearslong hiatus between the second and third seasons.

"There were obvious factors—the strikes, trying to make a schedule work with our very in-demand cast," show creator Sam Levinson told Variety in April, "but the real time was in trying to figure out how to find a way to pay respect to those who we lost."

Indeed, production took a tragic turn when Angus Cloud died from an accidental overdose in 2023 during the actors and writers strike. The cast and crew weathered another tragedy shortly before the season three premiere earlier this year, when Eric Dane passed away following a battle with ALS.

That's why Levinson wanted to "deliver a f--king slam dunk" of a third season. As he put it, "I want to finish this as strong as I can."

But that's not to say Euphoria is done for good. While the 41-year-old has "no plans" a fourth season, he admitted that he writes "every season like it’s the last season," so there's still the possibility for more episodes.

And HBO is leaving Euphoria's fate open-ended, too.

"We need to find out what Sam is thinking, what he wants to do creatively either with the show, with his life," HBO CEO Casey Bloys told Deadline in January. "I don’t know exactly what he wants to do next, so that’ll be a conversation with him."

Likewise, many members of the cast are deferring to Levinson.

Patrick Wymore/HBO

"If there are more stories to tell within our characters' worlds, then of course," Sweeney said of a possible season four return in an October interview with Variety. "I love Cassie."

Jessica Blair Herman—who joined the season three lineup as Cassie's suburban housewife friend Heather—agreed, telling Good Day New York in April, "It's up to Sam."

"He has this vision and wherever it takes him, it takes him," she continued. "And if you're lucky to be a part of it, then it's a dream come true."

But even if Euphoria were to return for another season, it would be without Elordi, whose character Nate was killed off in season three's penultimate episode. Calling it a "bittersweet" ending, he said in a behind-the-scenes segment following the May 24 episode, "This show is a massive part of—not just my career—but my life. It’s been amazing and I’m so proud of being a part of this."

Patrick Wymore/HBO

However, the actor isn't the only star ready to see their Euphoria journey come to an end. Zendaya, who also serves as an executive producer in addition to her leading role as Rue, believes the story has reached its natural conclusion.

“I think so, yeah,” she replied after being if season three would be the show's last during an April appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show. “That closure is coming.”

Still, Euphoria will always have a special place in the actress' heart.

“It cracked my heart open,” Zendaya added. “Rue taught me so much about empathy and about redemption. She taught me a lot, and I'm very grateful for all of it."

While Euphoria's fate continues to hang in the balance, read on for more shows coming back on TV.
