Don't Break These Met Gala Rules—Or You Won't Be Invited Back
Lauren Sánchez Bezos is proud to step into her Met Gala 2026 role.
Hours before fashion’s biggest night May 4, Jeff Bezos’ wife—who is serving as an honorary co-chair—expressed her gratitude for Anna Wintour.
“As we all know, no one has done more to elevate fashion as an art form,” Sánchez Bezos mused in a speech at the Costume Institute exhibit press preview, “or to create in this industry the respect it deserves. Thank you, Anna.”
Indeed, the Fly Who Flew Under the Sea author said she was grateful to be in a room alongside Wintour and co-chair Venus Williams. (Nicole Kidman and Beyoncé are also set to lead the event.)
“The Met has always understood something the rest of the world is finally catching up to: Fashion is art,” the 56-year-old continued, a nod to the evening’s “Fashion is Art” theme. “The designers we celebrate tonight are true artists. The Costume Institute is the custodian of their work—the way the Met is the custodian of any great painting or sculpture. That’s what this museum definitely understands.”
She and her husband understand it, too. And Sánchez Bezos shared exactly how the couple are prioritizing the future of fashion.
“The future of that art deserves investment,” the philanthropist continued. “That’s why the Bezos Earth Fund is backing scientists reimagining what fabric can be. Sustainable silk grown in labs—it is happening. Cotton rebuilt from the ground up.”
As she put it, “The designers in this exhibit and the ones coming up after deserve an industry as forward thinking as they are.”
And despite criticism of the Bezos’ involvement in the annual fashion fundraiser, Wintour previously shared her full support.

“We’re very grateful for her incredible generosity,” she told CNN in November 2025, “so we’re thrilled she’s part of the night.”

The 2014 Met Gala went down in infamy thanks to a certain elevator ride starring Beyoncé, Jay-Z and Solange Knowles. Leaked surveillance footage showed the rapper being physically accosted by Bey's little sister in the lift at NYC's Standard Hotel while his wife made no move to intervene, prompting the notoriously private trio to release a rare public statement reassuring anyone who was interested (a.k.a., everybody) that they remained a "united family."
Though we'll probably never know exactly what caused the altercation, Beyoncé's remix of "Flawless" alluded to it when she rapped, "Of course sometimes s--t goes down when there's a billion dollars on an elevator."
