Sleep Perfumes Are Having a Viral Moment: Experts Say if It's Extra or It Actually Helps You to RelaxCourtesy of Cayla Gray

We don't know about your FYP, but sleepy time anything is always trending on ours. Sleep perfumes are no exception! Did you know thousands of people wear fragrance to bed? Some might find this a little extra, but so what? If it helps you relax, we're all for it, and so are the experts we spoke to!

E! tapped the founder of Cayla Gray, Kelly Kussman, and certified Pediatric Sleep Consultant and author of The Peaceful Sleeper: An Intuitive Approach to Baby Sleep, Chrissy Lawler, to tell us everything we need to know about sleep perfumes.

What Is Sleep Perfume?

Sleep perfumes are fragrances and scents that people wear for bedtime, either to relax or to help them sleep better. These perfumes don't necessarily have to be marketed to sleep, though. They can be daily scents that are everything from nostalgic and fresh to cozy and gourmand. Still, with this trend taking off, more and more fragrances are coming out now that are specifically for sleeping.

"The nighttime fragrance was something that I really wanted to represent something a little bit softer, a little bit more of a quieter moment, something that smells when you're wrapped up with cozy blankets," Kussman told E!. "You want it to last through the night, but it's something that you don't want to overpower you when you lay your head down at night."

For Lawler, good sleep hygiene should be the most important part of your nighttime routine—scent is just a part of it. "If there's something that smells good and something that triggers relaxation, that's always going to be a positive thing," she said.

What Are the Benefits of a Sleep Perfume?

There are plenty of benefits to using sleep perfumes during your bedtime routine. The secret is all in the connection between your senses and your mind, emotions, and body. A specific scent can trigger full-body relaxation to get you in the right state of mind to sleep soundly

"There are some limited studies about something like lavender or chamomile being calming, but I think the stronger association is the mental conditioning, which is still incredibly powerful," Lawler told E!. "And so if you have a scent and then go to sleep, and you have a great night of sleep. You kind of tie that to this scent."

For both Lawler and Kussman, the scent is connected to a habit or ritual. We all know our sense of smell is the strongest one that connects to our memories; that's what makes it so nostalgic. It doesn't have to be a childhood memory or a specific vacation, either. It can be as simple as your sleep routine.

Still, sleep perfumes won't work as a band-aid solution to bad sleep hygiene. "If you have made all of the mistakes on the sleep hygiene front and then hope to dose yourself in lavender and sleep really well, it's not going to work. And then we don't want this smell to be the reminder of how much we're not sleeping," Lawler explained.

Best Sleep Perfumes & Fragrances for Bed

When it comes to sleep perfumes, notes like lavender, eucalyptus, and chamomile are perfect for relaxation. Still, other cozy smells like vanilla can be very calming, as well. "I would probably stay more herbal and less floral, but I think it's really up to the individual. And what gives you, in your heart, in your chest, that warm feeling, that release." Lawler said.

"The goal isn't to fix your sleep. It's to create a consistent cue. Something that night after night tells you it's okay to let the day go," Kussman said.

Editor's Pick

Cayla Gray Slumber the Perfume

Cayla Gray's Slumber features notes of lavender, chamomile, blue violet, cedarwood, vanilla bean, pale musk, amber, and sandalwood. "I wanted a chill scent. A lot of the things that are marketed for sleep are very clinical, and I didn't want that. I wanted something really beautiful, feminine, and emotional."

Lush Sleepy Body Spray

Before we knew about sleep perfumes, we had Lush's Sleepy. Whether in its body lotion or spray form, this scent puts us right to sleep with its blend of lavender oil and tonka absolute.

Editor's Pick

Maison Margiela REPLICA' Bubble Bath Eau de Toilette

REPLICA has plenty of relaxing scents, but an online (and personal) favorite is Bubble Bath. If you're a fan of fresh, subtle, clean, "just-got-out-of-the-shower" perfume, this is it with its notes of soap bubble accord, rose superessence, white musk, and coconut milk accord.

Philosophy Fresh Cream Eau de Toilette

Do you want to fall asleep to a true gourmand cozy scent? Thousands of people online wear Philosophy's Fresh Cream to sleep. This classic perfume features notes of heliotrope, tonka bean, whipped cream, and sugar.

Diptyque L'Eau Papier Eau de Toilette

Another TikTok sleep perfume favorite? Diptyque's L'Eau Papier, of course. This fragrance will have you dreaming of cozy library nooks and old books with its blend of white musks, steamed rice accord, mimosa, and blonde woods accord.

Being Frenshe Moon Milk Hair, Body & Linen Mist

Almost every scent from Being Frenshe's body mist line is recommended online as a sleep perfume. Everything from Salty to Hinoki (my personal favorite), but Moon Milk has a special place in people's hearts with its notes of creamy oat milk, warm vanilla, fresh nutmeg, and ginger flower.

Commodity Milk Expressive Eau de Parfum

Like a glass of hot milk before bed, fragrances with lactic notes make a perfect cozy sleep perfume. Commodity's Milk is a fan-favorite for its warm blend of cold milk, roasted marshmallow, mahogany wood, and tonka bean.

Snif Gentle Reminder

If you associate Ube (an earthy-sweet yam used in Filipino cooking) with nostalgic childhood memories, Snif's Gentle Reminder is your perfect bedtime fragrance. It blends lavender, purple ube, milk froth, black tea, palo santo, and date sugar into a lovely, sweet, and cozy scent.

Johnson's Baby Oil

Is there anything more nostalgic and gentle than baby oil? This light, fresh, and powdery scent takes us right to sleep, and reminds us of more relaxing times when we were just babies.

BYREDO Mojave Ghost Eau de Parfum

Fans on TikTok wear BYREDO's Mojave Ghost to bed. The herbal and woody scent features notes of ambrette, Jamaican nesberry, violet, sandalwood, magnolia, chantilly musk, crisp amber, and cedarwood.
