Oprah Winfrey Explains Walking Like She Was "90 Years Old" at Paris Fashion Week
Gayle King is putting her love life on the record.
The CBS Mornings anchor addressed speculation that she and Oprah Winfrey—who have been best friends for nearly 50 years—are secretly in a romantic relationship, as well as how the rumors have affected her dating life.
“It used to really bother me,” Gayle—who was married to William Bumpus before their 1993 split—told Alex Cooper on the May 27 episode of Call Her Daddy. “I was recently divorced and The National Enquirer did a story about, ‘That's the reason for the divorce because they're secretly gay.’”
“Number one, if we were gay, we would tell you because believe me, there's nothing wrong with it,” she added. “It's just, I prefer a man. So, we would tell you.”
In fact, the journalist emphasized that the rumors were especially detrimental to her dating life following her divorce, so much so she repeatedly asked Oprah to dispel the rumors on her talk show.
“I would say to her, ‘You've got to say something on your show because it's hard enough for me to get a date on a Saturday night and now people think I'm a lesbian, you've gotta say something,’” the 71-year-old recalled. “And she said, ‘No, we should just leave it be.’”

Though Gayle claims she asked the media mogul—who has been with longtime partner Stedman Graham for nearly 40 years—to help silence the chatter on multiple occasions, it seems Oprah wouldn’t budge. As Gayle recalled telling her longtime bestie, “‘Well, that's fine for you to say you have somebody. I don't.’”
Today, Gayle—mom to kids Kirby, 40, and William Jr., 39, with William—is in a different place in terms of how she handles outside noise.
“I've now gotten to the point in my life that very few things get to me,” she explained. “Because, you know, when you go on social media, it is an accelerator on hate.”
“As long as I feel good about what I'm doing, the people I respect and trust are okay with it, who will say, ‘Well mom, maybe you shouldn't have done that or somebody whose opinion I value,” she added. “Otherwise, you'll drive yourself nuts. So now I really don't care.”

But this wouldn’t be the first time Gayle addressed hearsay surrounding the nature of her and Oprah’s relationship. After all, she and the TV icon previously called out critics who questioned their close friendship.
“For years people used to say we were gay,” Oprah told Melinda Gates in a 2024 episode of her Moments That Make Us series alongside Gayle. “We were up against that for forever. People still think that.”
“Maybe people aren’t accustomed to seeing women with this kind of truth bond,” the 72-year-old added. “The reason why I think our friendship has worked is because Gayle is happier—not happy—for me in any kind of success or victory or challenge I get through than I am for myself.”

Thank goodness Lawrence is down to hang or we might have been robbed of one of our most beloved set of besties. Their friendship was born from an email the Oscar winner sent after watching Schumer's 2015 comedy. "I emailed her after I saw Trainwreck and said, 'I don't know where to get started. I guess I should just say it: I'm in love with you,'" she recalled to The New York Times. "We started emailing, and then emailing turned to texting."
But what really solidified their bond was Schumer's casual invite for her new pal to join her and her high school friends in the Hamptons. Shocked when she said yes, Schumer relaxed when she realized Lawrence is "the coolest chick you'll ever meet," she said on The Daily Show. "She's the best hang, she was like one of the gang."

Who doesn't want a friend that basically owns real estate in your corner? They've been tight since falling in love at first sight at the 2004 premiere of Man on Fire. "It was one of those instant chemistry things where you just feel like, 'I love this person. I love being around this person. This person makes me laugh,'" Lopez recalled to Entertainment Tonight of her Brooklyn-bred bestie.
And Remini was among those getting loud in celebration of Lopez's performance at President Joe Biden's inauguration. "I wrote her and said, 'You know, you're a girl from the Bronx. Making other friends jealous since a chance meeting at improv training in 1993, the frequent costars are so close, they liken their bond to that of family. "I think that Tina and I are chosen sisters," Poehler, whose sole sibling is younger brother Greg, told PopSugar while discussing their 2015 flick Sisters. "I think we are chosen family, so I think it's been fun to experience that thing I never got to experience in real life."

"It was like, you know, how people say love at first sight? We had that thing," Philipps told Entertainment Weekly of their initial interaction on the Dawson's Creek set. After years of existing in the same orbit, the "Hotline Bling" rapper and the "Hello" songstress, who have 19 Grammys between them, began throwing out the idea of a collaboration. "I really want us to do an official remix," she told Canada's etalk of their well-coordinated hits. "I love Drake. I love Drake so much. I even got the coat that's in the video, I got it delivered the other day, I ordered it. The red one."

Sure, your friend dates likely don't involve watching your pal play for Wimbledon and U.S. Open titles or get-togethers at a palace. But the bond between the tennis champ and the Duchess of Sussex began much like any other—over girl talk. "We hit it off immediately," Meghan wrote on her now-shuttered lifestyle website The Tig of their meeting at a 2014 Super Bowl event.
