Taylor Frankie Paul's Bachelorette Season Canceled After Dakota Mortensen Assault Video Surfaces
Evacuate the dancefloor—So You Think You Can Dance has come to an end.
Nearly two years after the Fox dancing competition series aired its 18th season, the network’s president Rob Wade confirmed the show is not returning any time soon.
“Obviously, a really important show in the history of Fox, and right now, there’s no plans to order another season,” Wade told reporters, per Variety, referring to the network’s upcoming 2026-2027 television schedule. “We’ve had conversations about it, but nothing formal.”
SYTYCD served as a cornerstone of Fox’s summer schedule for almost 20 years, with past judges including Allison Holker, Maksim Chmerkovskiy and the late Stephen “tWitch” Boss, as well as others such as Dance Moms alums JoJo Siwa and Maddie Ziegler.
Meanwhile, the series also scouted talent that went on to become huge stars in their own right including Dancing With the Stars’ Witney Carson, Ariana DeBose and Tate McRae. Meanwhile, the series also included celebrity hosts including Lauren Sánchez Bezos, who helmed its inaugural 2005 season, and Cat Deely.
Wade’s confirmation that SYTYCD will not return following its 18th season—which aired in 2024—comes after a period of attempted reinvention for the series. While the series aired consecutively from 2005 to 2019, it took a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, and returned in 2022 with JoJo, tWitch and Matthew Morrison as judges.
Following the comeback season, however, the Glee alum abruptly cut ties with the series due to his failure to follow “competition production protocols.”
“It is my deepest regret to inform you that I will be leaving the show,” Morrison wrote in a statement at the time. “After filming the audition rounds for the show and completing the selection of the 12 finalists, I did not follow competition production protocols, preventing me from being able to judge the competition fairly.”

Later that same year, tWitch died by suicide, and the production did not go forward with a season the following summer.
In 2024, the show returned for its 18th and final season—for now—which included a new format with challenges and a documentary-styled look at the backgrounds of contestants. That year, Anthony Curley was crowned the winner, but the overall season received lukewarm reviews from fans.
“The finale was so good it made me feel cheated by the rest of the season,” one fan wrote on Reddit after the finale aired. “The shift in focus from individual dancers and partner routines to group dance behind the scenes was not what I tuned in for. There just wasn’t enough actual dance on the show nor enough focus on individuals.”
Meanwhile, another chimed in of the new format, “It’s much different from the auditions in earlier seasons, but I still enjoyed it.”
