“Voluminous outfits, in particular those with a large train, that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theater are not permitted,” the policy stated. “The Festival welcoming teams will be obligated to prohibit Red Carpet access to anyone not respecting these rules.”

As Cannes explained to The Hollywood Reporter when they first set the dress code, the objective is "not to regulate attire per se but to prohibit full nudity on the carpet" in accordance with the festival’s framework and French law.

And while Riley found a way to make sheer outfit work for this year’s film festival, Halle Berry had to do a complete 180 for her look at the 2025 opening ceremony.

"I had an amazing dress by [designer Gurav Gupta] that I cannot wear tonight because it’s too big of a train," she told Variety at a news conference in May of last year. "I’m not going to break the rules."

Instead, the Oscar winner wore a black and white striped trapeze gown by Jacquemus, explaining, "I had to make a pivot."

As for the ban on nudity? Halle could see the benefit of that one, adding that it’s "probably also a good rule.”
