Julie Andrews Talks Lady Gaga's "Sound of Music" Tribute
The hills are alive with the sound of Dame Julie Andrews.
After all, the 90-year-old made a rare video appearance to kick off the annual World Parkinson's Congress conference to share her support for the organization.
"Good evening, everyone," Julie began the May 24 video, "I'm Julie Andrews and I'm pleased to welcome you to the seventh World Parkinson's Congress. Your participation is invaluable as we seek to find a cure to this terrible disease."
"I know well how devastating it can be," she continued. "May we all become a beacon of light to stop it in its tracks. Count me in as a red thread. Thank you."
The Princess Diaries star shared the message while sitting in a cozy white chair by a window. For the rare video, she opted to wear a white turtleneck shirt under a gray crewneck sweatshirt. She accessorized the look with a long golden chain and chunky matching earrings.
As Julie—who shares Emma Walton Hamilton, 63, with ex-husband Tony Walton, as well as daughters Amy Leigh Edwards, 52, and Joanna Lynne Edwards, 48, with late husband Blake Edwards—embraces her 90s, she has continued to enjoy a royally abundant career.
In addition to voicing Lady Whistledown in Bridgerton for four seasons, she recently shared that she and Emma—who have written 30 books together over the past 25 years—had collaborated to reissue their 2010 children's book The Great American Mousical.
The Sound of Music actress was grateful that she and her daughter had worked together on the project, especially after a 1997 throat surgery left her unable to continue singing professionally.
"I would go completely mad if I didn't have some lovely thing to work on," she told Forbes in 2023. "I think really, since I had a bad surgery on my throat, I've just turned to this with Emma and it's been such a joy. It has been very refreshing for me and reviving in a way, because of course, it was a very sad event."
Nonetheless, she knows how lucky she is to thrive in such a competitive industry.
"I've just been so really lucky in my career that the opportunities, the mentors—somehow being somewhere at the right moment," Julie added. "None of it was really planned—and so, things don't just land on your desk every second but surprises do, and I just think nobody has been more fortunate than I've been."
