Don't Break These Met Gala Rules—Or You Won't Be Invited Back

Meryl Streep won’t be attending the 2026 Met Gala. That’s all.

The Devil Wears Prada star is skipping the annual event May 4 following speculation that she would finally make her debut on the steps of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.

But that should come as no surprise.

“Meryl has been invited to the Met Gala for many years but has never attended,” the Mamma Mia! star’s rep told People in a May 4 statement. “While she appreciates Vogue, Anna [Wintour] and her incredible imagination and stamina—it has never quite been her scene.”

Though fans were hoping it was only a matter of time until Meryl made it to the Met, especially because of her friendship with Anna—who is widely considered to be the inspiration behind Meryl’s character in The Devil Wears Prada and its sequel—they may never see the Oscar winner partake in fashion’s biggest night. 

That said, fashion lovers can still find style inspiration in her performance as Runway editor Miranda Priestly, which she recently revealed wasn’t all inspired by the famed Vogue editor.
