In addition to his and longtime partner Erin’s son, the 36-year-old detailed why the one-man play itself—which follows the protagonist making a list of hopeful things about life to invigorate his depressed mother—is also on his list, especially for the show’s token audience participation.

“It’s both thrilling and stressful,” he continued. “It’s honestly the reason I wanted to do the show ‘cause it’s a way of relating to an audience and just relating to a large room of people that I really rarely get. So the chance to just run around and connect with everybody before the show in that way is really cool.”

Daniel will continue his Tony-nominated run through May 24, at which point he’ll pass the baton to Law & Order: SVU’s Mariska Hargitay. 

And while the What If star had absolutely no advice for the Emmy winner, he did tease one handy trick he has for picking his participants from the crowd. 

“There’s a couple of little bits and things that I have recommended to her about casting,” Daniel shared. “Like, for instance, if there’s somebody that you want to play a part in the show and they kind of don’t want to do it—if they are with their kids, you make sure you ask them in front of their kids and then you walk away and then their kids will peer pressure them into saying yes.”
