Olivia Rodrigo has officially entered a new era—but that doesn’t mean her commitment to every girly pop Gen Z’s favorite dress style is going anywhere.

This week, the pop star released “drop dead,” the first single from her forthcoming album you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love. Alongside it, a Petra Collins-directed video in the Palace of Versailles that riffed on shades of Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette. It was fashion-packed and reference-heavy, too. Rodrigo, styled by Chloe and Chenelle Delgadillo, pranced around the palace in a baby blue chemise and bloomers via Chloé pre-fall 2026, and a pearl studded mini-dress worn by the late, great Jane Birkin onscreen.

Rodrigo popped into Feel Karaoke in Los Angeles to celebrate the launch. She wore a pale pink custom babydoll dress by designer Jane Doe: the mini-dress features a sweet rounded collar and pink tulle underskirt. On her feet, some white over-the-knee socks and patent silver, double-strap Miu Miu pumps. She also toted a Rixo x Dragon Diffusion collab spiky black shoulder bag, tempering the otherwise adorable look with some edge.

The babydoll dress is an Olivia Rodrigo signature. The outfit formula, which consists of a babydoll-socks-pumps combo, is repeated on her new album cover art, where she wears a vintage Peter Pan collared version and Kurt Gieger Mary Jane heels. In another promo video, she also wore a powder pink cap sleeve mini dress from Ciao Lucia, styled similarly with pointelle socks and Gucci Mary Jane platform pumps. Repeating the same exact fit in slightly different fonts is an interesting—and quite bold—stylistic decision to take for a celebrity, so often expected to turn out different looks on every step of the promo tour. But so far, for Rodrigo, it’s a winner: the pop star is so very assured in her own sense of personal style, and it firmly establishes her new era without compromising that.

Plus, the dress style proliferates across contemporary designers and is an easy vintage pull. Even before this album cycle, Rodrigo was sporting a butter yellow babydoll from trendsetting label My Mum Made It—expect to find sweet sailor mini-dresses, lace-trim sets, and silky bloomers in mint greens and powder pinks in abundance from the brand, too. According to Nyree Leckenby, founder of My Mum Made It, the appeal is all about balance. “Babydoll dresses embody the ease and effortlessness we crave in summer,” she previously told Vogue. “The breezy silhouette keeps things light in the heat while still feeling styled and considered. From a design perspective, they strike the perfect mix of comfort and nostalgia without trying too hard. Celebrities love them because they photograph beautifully and carry a sense of romantic ease that still feels fashion–forward and unique.”

On the runways, the babydoll has persisted for labels like Chloé, Loewe, and Valentino. On other celebrities? Look to Alexa Chung, Elle Fanning, and Kaia Gerber, who trade in the similarly playful, feminine aesthetics as Rodrigo. Musicians like Sabrina Carpenter (sporting a sparkling ruby Dior babydoll at Coachella) and Addison Rae are also devoted to the billowing silhouette.

As the temperatures begin to creep up, a babydoll is an easy, one-and-done look to keep in your back pocket.
