Missy Elliott, by her own admission, doesn’t go to many fashion shows. But she will make an exception for her friend and longtime collaborator, Pharrell. “This is special,” Elliott tells Vogue ahead of Louis Vuitton’s spring 2027 menswear show in Paris. “I’m excited to see what Pharrell’s been cooking up!”
While Elliott’s music is rife with Pharrell’s signature four-count intro—case in point: the duo’s infectiously fun 2015 bop “WTF (Where They From)”—she’s embracing his sartorial signatures now, too. For the Vuitton show, she opted for a suiting moment in a gray plaid blazer and matching trousers, which she paired with a fresh-off-the-runway embroidered denim Speedy.
“It means everything,” Elliott says of wearing Pharrell’s designs. “That’s my brother right there! We came up together, so seeing him take it to another level and become the Creative Director at Louis Vuitton? That’s historic!” For Elliott, wearing his Louis Vuitton transcends style. “Wearing his collection isn’t just about fashion,” she says, “it’s about celebrating Black excellence, creativity, and family. I’m just so incredibly proud of him.”
As someone with a long working relationship with Pharrell, Elliott has a unique vantage point when it comes to his design career. “Pharrell is know for sampling something classic and remixing to create a masterpiece. He might take a 1970s drum break, chop it up, put a futuristic synth over it, and make a brand-new hit. That’s exactly what he does with his designs,” she says. “He took the classic Louis Vuitton Damier pattern, chopped it up and mixed it with skate culture.”
As Elliott puts it, “Pharrell isn’t just designing clothes—it’s like he’s designing a wearable album. Each look is like a different track, but the whole collection is like one cohesive sound.”
