From Runway to Reality: How Spring 2026 Made Hobbies Chic
Minty Mellon · 2026-04-18 · via Vogue

Now that warmer weather has finally arrived, any excuse to spend more time outdoors feels entirely justified. While I wouldn’t exactly call myself sporty, I do love the idea of a new hobby—the kind you can ease into with a bit of curiosity—and the right outfit, of course. Maybe it’s gallery hopping in Chelsea as I toy with the idea of becoming a painter (I’ve never taking a drawing class, but I could start now?). Maybe I’ll finally commit to a running routine—ambitious, I know. In any case, spring lends itself to experimentation, and this season, the runways seemed to agree. It’s not just chic to have a hobby—it’s even better to dress for it.

Bright colors, fresh silhouettes, and plenty of spectacle defined the season, but what stood out most to me were the subtle nods to everyday pursuits.

At TWP, looks felt primed for the outdoors; whether your niche is gardening or birdwatching, the neutral palette, rain boots, and oversized hats suggested a wardrobe ready to get muddy. Tory Burch, meanwhile, leaned into ladylike sophistication with pencil skirts, collegiate polos, and top handle bags that feel apt for quieter endeavors—I’m thinking some version of this can be my next book club look. At Miu Miu, printed and embellished aprons emphasized the rituals (and realities) of daily life—home cooking, arranging flowers, even setting the table for a family game night. Other references were more understated: Celine brought cycling helmets to the runway, while Dries Van Noten channeled a relaxed surfer mindset with embellished board shorts. (It’s all about contrast.)

No matter your chosen pastime, the spring/summer 2026 runways made a compelling case for clothes that feel ready for whatever new hobby you’re picking up this season—whether you’re a just starting out or settling into something you’ve come to master. Think sneakers study enough for a long hike, overalls to protect from paint splatter, or an oversized tote for your antique shopping. Below, discover the spring hobbies we can’t wait to turn into a fashion moment.

The Green Thumb

Tending to a rose garden or your next batch of tomatoes calls for a look that’s unafraid of getting muddy. Accessories are key here—focus on gardening clogs, a bucket bag, and an oversized sun hat—that can handle fresh soil... and rainy street grime.

The Surfer Mindset

Whether you’re catching waves or soaking up the sun on a friend’s roof, the season’s take on surf style leans minimalist with a polished edge. Layer Dries Van Noten’s capri pants over a classic black bikini for a hint of embellishment, then finish with crisp white accessories that feel cool against the heat.

The Avid Reader

If you haven’t joined Vogue Book Club yet, consider this your sign—we’re reading The Devil’s Wears Prada, of course! Sharp tailoring, polished separates, and a hint of editor-approved attitude line up with the season’s literary chic mood.

The Serial Entertainer

You know your way around a kitchen and always have a full menu ready to execute. Consider this your cue to make your signature bolognese in style, courtesy of Miu Miu’s runway-approved apron—because even when you step out of the kitchen, your sense of style stays intact.

The Bike Commuter

On the spring/summer 2026 runways, Celine proved that commuting to work can be nothing short of chic. With your cycling helmet in hand, lean into preppy, breathable separates suited for weaving through city streets.

The Antiques Shopper

On the hunt for an armoire or perhaps a vintage silver set? Keep your oversized tote close by. For days spent digging through dusty bins, or an impromptu drive to an estate sale, you’ll want to be comfortable in timeless essentials—a classic tee, worn-in jeans, and crisp white shoes—then finish with a hint of vintage charm, like Juju Vera’s Fiona cuff.

The Runner

Whether you’re training for the marathon or just easing into your first 5K, you’ll need the right attire to log those miles. Try mini running shorts, oversized sunglasses, and sleek trainers—ready for an early morning job and your well-earned days off.

The Maritime Muse

Nothing beats a day by the water, but for long stretches at sea, preparation is essential. Loewe’s windbreaker and Prada’s nylon skirt are ready to take on the elements, while L.L. Bean’s trusty tote holds all your essentials with ease.

The Painter

Days at the studio can be fulfilling, but also messy, so dress accordingly. Think overalls, lived-in denim, and a colorful bandana; unfussy staples that can handle splatters of paint or clay. Keep it in a neutral palette for a goes-with-everything ease that still feels considered.

The Birdwatcher

Whether you’re in Central Park or making your way to the Adirondacks, stay at the ready to spot a Northern cordinal or red-tailed hawk with a set of binoculars. (A playful nod to the pastime, like JW Anderson’s pigeon clutch, can also get you in the spirit.)

The Museum Goer

Dress the part with elevated essentials that will carry you from Carol Bove’s show at the Guggenheim to an afternoon spent at Marcel Duchamp’s exhibition at the MoMA. A canvas tote, at the ready, makes space for notes, sketches, and whatever inspiration the day brings, while red ballet flats and a floral necklace add that artsy touch.

The Climber

Ready to pick up a new activity this spring? Loewe makes a case for climbing with its Grip sneakers, inspired by the rubber-soled approach shoes climbers wear to the crag. Even if you don’t progress past a V2 indoors, these are all about the vibe anyway.
