During last summer’s wedding season, wedding planner Lynn Easton’s clients were focused on one element key to their big day: the social strategy. “It was about ‘the activation’, ‘the shot’, or ‘the party trick’ that would put them at the top of the algorithm,” she says. But in 2026, Easton and her colleague, Dawson Haynes, who plan lavish weddings from Nashville to the Amalfi Coast for bespoke events company Easton Events, have noticed a step in the opposite direction.

Many couples are rethinking weddings in 2026 to resist trends, avoid the sameness of the algorithm, and create occasions that feel more personal. So, from the fashion to the food, this year, fluid trends that are open to interpretation are coming to the fore. “Our clients have seen it all and then some, so can efficiently articulate what they do and do not like,” Haynes says.

Pinterest has racked up seven billion wedding-related searches and more than 16.7 billion saved posts in the last 12 months. And looking at the platform’s 2026 Wedding Trends report, released earlier this week, it’s clear that “couples aren’t just planning weddings, they’re rewriting them”, says Heather Clark, head of fashion and luxury at Pinterest UK. “We are starting to see fatigue around the Instagrammable performance that weddings have been in the past,” she adds.

“What I’m seeing in 2026 is a move away from trend-led weddings and toward more considered design,” says Sarah Young, founder of luxury wedding planner service Sarah Young Events. “Last year, a lot of weddings were still very [social media] driven — beautiful, but often quite repetitive. This year feels more intentional. Couples are focusing less on quantity and more on quality, and on how the wedding actually feels for their guests.”

Vogue Weddings contributor Shelby Wax points to a wedding she covered last summer, where the bride and groom, artist Ingvild Gillet and Rick Owens designer Connor Hickey, created a unique wedding scent that was infused into 200 candles for guests to take home.

Of course, 2026 is shaping up to be a bumper year for celebrity weddings, with many of the world’s biggest stars tying the knot. Zendaya got married twice, on-screen to Robert Pattinson in The Drama, and secretly off-screen to her long-term partner Tom Holland. Couples Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, as well as Dua Lipa and Callum Turner are rumored to be getting married in the coming months. And as of this week, Zoë Kravitz and Harry Styles are seemingly engaged, too. Not to mention more iconic fictional bridal moments, including the gothic brides in Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights and Netflix hit show Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, Cassie and Nate’s cursed nuptials in Euphoria season three, and ’90s minimalism in Love Story.

Ultimately, it’s celebrities who are helping to move the needle on what’s expected of a wedding, as we saw last year with Charli XCX’s low-key London affair. When billionaire Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez staged their lavish nuptials in Venice last year, London-based luxury wedding planner Mark Niemierko was interviewed by the Metro, explaining that while the ceremony wouldn’t be to everyone’s taste, it was a welcome break from cookie-cutter “beige” weddings that became the norm.

“From interiors, to your Instagram grid and then your wedding, the beige era is over. My reaction to the Bezos nuptials last summer was simple excitement at seeing something new from a celebrity. Less samey; things need to be lifted,” says Niemierko. “What excites me now is that couples are reclaiming their weddings as a genuine expression of who they are, not what photographs well on a grid.” According to GWI, the top reason why couples are straying away from an unconventional wedding is to design a day that actually reflects their personalities.

Here are the top wedding trends, themes, and moods to note for the 2026 season.

The indie bride

Gen Z brides in particular are ditching the “classic bride” aesthetic for other options in 2026, via dramatic styling, statement accessories, and beauty looks that read like an editorial shoot instead of a traditional wedding checklist, Pinterest’s Clark says.

While alternative bridal looks were previously popular with celebrities and fashion industry types, on Pinterest, searches are up for terms including “celestial whimsigoth” (+1,330%), “red veil wedding” (+255%), “black gothic wedding dress” (+85%), and “alt wedding rings” (+275%), suggesting mass appeal for these big day aesthetics. Even “two tooth grillz” (+460%) have become an unlikely wedding trend, per Pinterest data.

For its latest bridal edit, Jimmy Choo leaned into the alternative bride, tapping soon-to-be bride Gabbriette for its campaign, styled in an untraditional red gown and veil for some of the shoot, with tattoos and razor-thin brows on show. Gabbriette is a key example of the alternative or indie bride trend, Clark says, and is set to influence more brides-to-be on staying true to their personal style during their nuptials this summer. The ever-growing list of fashion brands launching bridal is also facilitating the trend, as brides opt for their favorite labels, from Vaquera to Sinéad O’Dwyer, as they head down the aisle.

“We definitely have seen some of those brides come through,” Wax says, referring to the weddings she’s covered for Vogue. In fact, the aforementioned wedding (with the personalized scent) brought this exact mood. “The wedding was like an editorial campaign,” she says. “And you should be a reflection of your personal style on your wedding day. I think there are more designers putting options on the market for people; I’ve seen a lot more black this season.”

“There is a new set of rules for 2026: there are no rules,” Easton adds. “The guardrails are down, and we are really seeing the power of personality and preference packed behind each garment selection, down to the last accessory.”

Rooted romance

Last year, brown dominated wedding color schemes. But for 2026, new earthy tones are entering the fray, like plum, olive, and fig.

“If you look at TikTok wedding content, you will see people freaking out that everyone is apparently choosing a chartreuse and burgundy color palette,” Wax says. “We covered a wedding with that color scheme a year ago, and then it multiplied within the Pinterest space, which is where people are now finding it.”

“We’re calling it rooted romance,” Clark says. “It’s really about moody, nature-driven themes that feel rich, romantic, and organic.” On Pinterest, searches are up for terms including “plum and olive wedding” (+1,380%), “muted terracotta” (+545%), “fig wedding” (+515%), “merlot wedding” (+370%), “raspberry wedding” (+330%), and “dusty olive” (+270%).

“Palettes are definitely richer and more grounded [for 2026],” adds Young. “We’re seeing a lot of warm neutrals, layered creams, soft golds, and then deeper tones like olive, terracotta, or even oxblood coming in very selectively.” Monochromatic schemes are also very strong, especially when they’re built through texture rather than color, she adds. “Overall, color is being used much more carefully.”

According to Pinterest, searches are up by 95% for lace wedding gloves and 85% for black gothinc wedding dresses.

Pattern-on-pattern is another key trend, as couples express their individuality, says wedding planner Niemerko, but “always in light, clean, fresh tones”, from tablescapes to bridal parties. “Think a white cloth with a beautiful pattern, matching napkins, seat pads, the whole table telling a story. Then, the odd pop of something bolder, a deep burgundy or a dark green, be it a napkin ribbon or a flower head to add personality and prevent it from feeling too safe. Color-wise, think light grays and blues with white, ivory with deep greens, yellows and lilacs. Bright but not bold; fresh rather than loud.”

Contrasting these earth tones, however, is the traditional desire for a white wedding, Wax adds. But in the spirit of bride-to-be Swift, who even named a song after it, iridescent shade opalite is a trending take on white for 2026. “It’s a divergence, earthy versus fantasy,” Clark says. On Pinterest, searches are spiking for “opalite aesthetic” (+2,710%), “opalescent aesthetic” (+685%), “chrome wedding” (+340%), and “midnight teal” (+470%). It’s also affecting silhouette, with an uptick in searches for ethereal or fantastical silhouettes, like “pearl corset wedding dress” (+100%).

Retro and vintage inspiration

In the vein of individualism, brides are continuing the move into an era that feels less generic and more high fashion in 2026, says Easton, as they source unique, archival, or vintage looks with a story to tell.

A lot of brides are also playing it safe, with classic designs like lace dresses and ballgowns, says Wax, who just covered New York and Barcelona bridal weeks. “Vintage has become so huge in the wedding space, which ties back to brides wanting to be individual,” she says. “They want to say ‘It’s archival’, or ‘I found it’ — it’s not what everyone’s going to be seeing in the salons next season.”

On Net-a-Porter, bridal consumers are leaning into vintage-inspired looks, with “delicate lace and soft transparencies adding a gothic, romantic edge”, says Brigitte Chartrand, Net-a-Porter chief buying and merchandising officer. Traditional styles are also being reimagined with modern twists, she adds, and Vivienne Westwood remains a bestselling brand for the retailer, alongside heavily embellished, vintage-inspired label Clio Peppiat.

Ryan Murphy’s Love Story, based on the relationship between JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, has had a major bearing on bridal silhouettes this year, with a focus on minimal designs in fine fabrics. “Emilia Wickstead, Own, and Halfpenny London all speak to and create within this less-is-more approach,” says Niemierko. “Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy proved that restraint is the ultimate luxury, and brides are clearly feeling that again right now.”

“We are seeing [the Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy] sensibility seep into many avenues of the planning process — in gown choices, floral compositions, the overall tone of how couples want their day to feel. Understated but completely and utterly intentional,” adds Easton.

“Bridalwear has become much more refined,” adds Young. “[I’m seeing] cleaner silhouettes, better tailoring, and less focus on heavy embellishment. Fabric and cut are really doing the work now.” Outfit changes are still popular, she adds, but they feel more intentional rather than being solely for impact.

One trending style that’s slightly more dramatic? The drop waist, spotted on Call Her Daddy’s Alex Cooper last year, continues to trend this season, with Pinterest searches for “drop waist wedding dress corset” up 1,090% year-on-year.

Bridal accessories and headgear

Bridal style is taking a full-accessory approach this year, as brides experiment with headwear, bags, veils, and jewelry to dial up or down their looks throughout the day, or to create a more curated, expressive look, Chartrand says.

“We’re seeing headwear as a rising anchor, as well as dresses that are more transformable and detachable,” says Pinterest’s Clark. The platform has noted a surge in search terms including “Juliet veil cap” (+245%),” bandeau tiara” (+140%), “fascinator styles” (1,865%), and “custom wedding hats” (+125%).

“Headpieces are definitely on the rise,” Wax agrees. “We’re seeing a lot of designers creating more options and people are definitely enjoying that. They still can be quite classic. I think people are looking for beautiful jewelry, beautiful earrings; veils are getting more creative, capes are getting more creative. People are finding ways to add a little extra flair throughout their day.” On Pinterest, searches are up for “cape veil wedding” (+110%), “wedding cape dress” (+185%), and “wedding dress with bolero” (+330%).

As we saw bubbling up last year, dresses are becoming more transformable through detachable layers and ceremony-to-reception styling. “It’s very rare for us to cover a wedding where someone’s wearing one dress all day. And the market is adjusting to that,” says Wax. Outside the luxury space, as the cost of living rises, some brides are looking for more mileage from their wedding outfits. “People are really looking for things that can adjust. There are definitely some bridal lines that are creating a lot of pieces that are very dynamic, where you can change it up throughout the day, or you can swap in the skirt and it’ll be a mini later, or a pant.”

As for the groom, Pinterest has noted an uptick in men’s bridal jewelry. The brooch trend, which showed up during red carpet season earlier this year, is bubbling up among husbands-to-be, notably in shades of silver, Clark says. Among wedding searches, Pinterest has noted an uptick in those for “men’s jewelry aesthetic” (+890%), “hand bracelet men” (+595%), “pinky finger ring men” (+550%), “groom brooch” (+435%), and “men’s chain necklace” (+360%).

Quirky accents

As food and drink increasingly becomes a status symbol, couples are investing heavily in unusual tablescapes, homeware, and culinary delights that add more personal touches to their special days.

Pinterest has seen a surge in quirky cake search terms like “flower pot cake ideas” (+715%), “wedding cake tiramisu” (+635%), “kitsch cake” (+545%), “lyrics cake” (+355%), “illusion cakes” (+215%), and “tarot cake” (+85%) in 2026.

When it comes to bouquets, brides are now looking at alternatives to flowers, with “statement-making options that play with material, shape, and sentiment”, Clark says —from beaded and embroidered florals, to bouquets that double as accessories or keepsakes. Personalization is the common theme, with couples using bouquets to reflect inside jokes, individual aesthetics, and texture-driven styling.

The enduring bouquet purse trend, which featured at many weddings last year, is up 1,015% on Pinterest. Meanwhile, searches are also up for “pipe cleaner bouquet” (+1,275%), “book flower arrangement” (+725%), “bedazzled flower” (+715%), and “note bouquet” (+555%).

Overall, brands should look to offer options for all kinds of bride in 2026, to cater to the shifts in the market. In this new era of individualism, brands should think about personal touches for special days that can differentiate a product from wedding to wedding, Wax says. “It could be free engraving, or a custom lipstick color just for your wedding day,” she says. “Anything special, unique, and personalized is tapping into the feeling of ‘I want a wedding like nobody else’s’.”

While it’s currently peak time in the Northern Hemisphere to tap into the bridal opportunity, brands and experts agree that brands should prioritize the market all year round. Bridal messaging is a priority during the post-festive period, with retailers like Anthropologie and Nobody’s Child launching “Wedding Shops” as early as January 1, according to EDITED.

“Weddings are massive for us, and they continue to grow year-on-year,” Clark says. “What I talk a lot about with brands is, you shouldn’t have a wedding campaign — you need to have a wedding always-on strategy. There used to be more spikes in searches and key times for weddings, but now it can be all year round.”
