Olivia Rodrigo is kicking off her new era with a bang. Today, the musician released “drop dead,” the first track from her forthcoming album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love.

Rodrigo and director Petra Collins (one of the singer’s frequent collaborators) shut down Versailles for the accompanying music video, where the singer lounged in bed on her laptop and bopped around the halls in a distinctly Gen-Z-meets-Marie Antoinette look.

Styled by Chloe and Chenelle Delgadillo, Rodrigo wore a dusty blue off-the-shoulder Chloé pre-fall 2026 top, silky ecru bloomers, and white pointelle knee socks. But its the images of Rodrigo, running around in retro pink over-ear headphones and glued to her laptop in bed, distinctly call back to the girlish, modern, and sometimes anachronistic motifs of Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette. (One behind-the-scenes photo of Kirsten Dunst and Jason Bateman pondering a laptop in full Rococo costume feels especially poignant.)

But Marie Antoinette wasn’t the only famous figure on the moodboard. Rodrigo opened the music video in a neon-lit club, dressed in a pearl-embellished minidress, which eagle-eyed viewers quickly IDed as Jane Birkin’s dress from the 1975 film Catherine et Cie. “My Pinterest is all babydoll dresses and ’70s necklines,” Rodrigo told British Vogue in her April cover story. An Easter egg for what was to come, perhaps?

The song, which the singer said is “the first chapter” of her latest record, “makes me wanna skip around and roll the windows down and make out!” But what does Rodrigo’s “drop dead” music video fashion hint towards? Coppola’s Marie Antoinette details the Dauphine’s life of luxury, but also her loneliness. Perhaps Olivia Rodrigo is offering us a glimpse into the narrative of the rest of her album.
