Hannah Traore’s namesake gallery may live in a trendy pocket of the Lower East Side, but she keeps something of a museum archive at her home in Williamsburg. And to combat New York’s infamous shortage of storage, she made one crucial decision there. “I turned the primary bedroom in my apartment into my closet,” she says. “So now it’s really a walk-in closet. There are shoes, clothes, glasses, jewelry, and bags all the way to the ceiling.”

Traore’s curatorial tastes mimic her fashion sense: both are marked by colorful pieces from up-and-coming talent. While her gallery’s walls feature Camila Falquez’s vibrant photography and Misha Japanwala’s dynamic breastplates, her closet boasts crocheted Diotima, dimensional Magda Butrym, and gilded Wiederhoeft corsetry. “I love wearing things that I haven’t seen—that people haven’t seen—that are sculptural, interesting,” Traore says. “I feel that way about art. I get so excited when I see an artist doing something that I’ve never seen before.”

In “Closet Case,” we ask well-dressed people to give us a peek inside their closets. Here, the Canadian-Malian gallerist gives us a tour of her museum-like walk-in.

Vogue: What do you wear the most in your closet?

Hannah Traore: My glasses. I have an embarrassing amount of optical wear—like 15 to 20 [pairs] in rotation. I just got a black vintage Chanel pair. Outside of vintage, I love Port Tanger—I have this really fun aviator-esque pair that I get a million compliments on.

What do you wear the least?

There’s a pair of orange heels from The Attico that I love—they have a really blocky heel. Gorgeous, but they’re just so hard to walk in that my knees have to bend, and I have never worn them even one time.

What piece could you not live without?

A CUUP bra. I have really big breasts, and having a bra that actually fits me changed all my outfits. You have to have a good base before you can do anything.

Your most treasured piece?

My mom used to travel around West Africa buying art and selling it in Toronto. She had this gorgeous suit made in West Africa for my grandmother. It’s an indigo-dyed pattern with cinched pants and a loose, oversized suit jacket. My grandmother never really wore it, so I ended up with it.

What are you struggling to style?

A vintage Loewe shirt with a zipper in the front. Usually, when I buy something, I ask myself, “How am I going to style this?” But this piece was so good that I was like, Actually, it doesn’t matter, I’m going to get it either way. It’s been three years, and I’ve not worn it once because I just have not figured out how to style it.

What couldn’t you bear to part with?

My Isabel Marant sneaker wedges. I always put them in the pile to give away, and I just can’t do it, and I don’t know why—I’ve never worn them. I think I was so excited to get them at the time. I’m a very sentimental person.

What piece do you regret getting rid of?

I bought a really cute suede zip-up shirt-jacket. I never had been able to style it, so I gave it away—but to this day, I’ll have a skirt or pants or whatever, and I think, “You know what would be fucking perfect with this?” I’m so mad.

Your biggest splurge?

Moda Operandi has 50% off sales twice a year, but sometimes that really feeds delusion. I ended up getting a Wiederhoeft corset. It reminds me of me as a child—I’ve always been so girly.
