Perhaps you’ve heard, but around these parts, we’re very interested in the overlap between fashion and art. And as fate would have it, art fair season has officially descended on New York like a fabulous spring shower. With it come artists, curators, gallerists, collectors, and art lovers from around the globe, touching down in the Big Apple—and with them, their unique takes on style.

Yesterday, we dropped in on a preview for Frieze—arguably the biggest of the major international fairs. While we were there to check out the sculptures, paintings, and other objects d’art (Cindy Sherman! Alice Neel! Lorna Simpson), we couldn’t help but notice all the arty takes on everyday dressing. As expected, there were plenty of wonderful outfits, from the eccentric to the classic to the just plain chic. Which got us thinking: Who’s more stylish? Art world people or fashion people? While you’re mulling over the very important answer to the question, take a look at some of Frieze Art Fair’s finest dressers below.

Name: Jennifer Levitt

Will you walk me through what you're wearing today? The top is Bottega Veneta, the skirt is Khaite, and the shoes are Gabriela Hearst.
What was your thinking when you got dressed today? It's spring, but it's a bit on the cool side. I just always want to look as chic as possible. Especially for the art crowd.

Name: Julie Ragolia

What brings you in to the fair today? There are a few galleries that I have works from here, and I'm a huge art nerd.
Do you dress differently for Frieze than if you were going to a fashion event? No, no. This is how I dress. It’s just part of life.
So what are you wearing today? These are Phoebe Philo pants and the boots are from The Row. I just came off a bike, so my shirt is wildly untucked and crooked.
It looks cool, though! The shirt is Comme des Garçons, and this is the shittiest undershirt.
The best T-shirts are the shittiest ones. Exactly. I've owned this for 20 years. And the blazer is from Peter Do. And the bag is Bottega, and the glasses are from Oliver Peoples.
Are you wearing any jewelry? I'm not a jewelry person. No jewelry ever. I'm so active and messy, everything always gets caught on something.

What are you wearing today? I'm wearing a brand called Sono. It's an English brand from a husband and wife team, and it's a full suit. And I've got on a vintage Fendi bag and Dries shoes.
So what were you thinking this morning when you were getting ready? I was thinking about wearing more color, but the weather threw me today, and I knew I had a long day. So it was about comfort and ease. I like to dress in monotone colors most of the time. I usually wear shades of green or terracotta, but I find that I'm always playing with my color palette. I'll either work in complete opposites or shades in the same color family.
Tell me about your jewelry. Oh, this is Foundry — Beth is a friend of mine. And I collect a lot of estate jewelry.
I love your hair. It's inspired by my mom. She's Lebanese and wore her hair super-long. At a certain point,, I was like, I'm just going to let it grow.

Tell me about the vibe you were going for as you got ready. I wanted to wear something comfortable, but I love a statement piece. Today, I went with my bubble skirt because it makes me feel good. The weather outside is nice, so I want to celebrate the coming of spring. And I feel like the fashion here is always top-tier, so I wanted to match that energy.
What are you wearing? Everything's from Zara — and I'm wearing Prada shoes and a St. Agni bag.
Tell me about the scrunchie—they're controversial. With my curly hair, whenever I wear it in a bun, I like to have a statement piece. My hair is super long, and I have big curls. This week I wanted to keep it simple, and I don't have a lot of time in the morning.

Are you looking for anything in particular, or do you come in open-minded? Definitely open-minded. I think this is a great opportunity for fairs not in New York to bring what they're working with in their programs to this incredible audience—not just New Yorkers, but people from all over the world who come to New York for this week specifically. I've really enjoyed a number of things. I love the new Cindy Sherman works at the Hauser & Wirth booth. I love David Shrigley's "Gong" at Anton Kern — it's unexpected and fun.
So, what are you wearing? Well, these [shoes] are Belgians. I'm a big Belgian guy. My wife has been wearing these forever and finally got me into the store last fall, and I was an immediate convert. I think they are just bar-none the classiest, coolest shoes in New York. I'm just a huge fan, and I was very resistant for a long time. This blazer is just from J.Crew. It's the Brendon Babenzian era, from, like, three years ago. He kind of revamped the whole thing,, and I put some suede patches on it to hammer home the professorial approach I'm going for.
Are you a jacket, shirt, and tie guy every day? Absolutely. I think it's nice to get dressed up in the morning. I've got two young kids, and it's always a little hectic at home. It's about not having to think about what you're going to do. So it's a Brooks Brothers shirt and your jacket and the tie—and you're kind of … just ready to go.
Who dresses better: fashion people or art people? Wow. I think inherently you're going to get more consistency with the fashion people, but I think you'll get some unexpected bangers out of the art people.

So what are you wearing today? Honestly, I want to be comfortable and I love this dress, it's from Sandro. And these sneakers are super comfortable and go with everything, and this is a great cardigan because it gets cold in the fair. And the bag is Hermes and can be dressed up or down.
Tell me about your hair — the color really pops. I just wanted to change up my look a couple of years ago. I had, like, a mental breakdown. Just kidding.
The hair dye-mental breakdown pipeline is real. Literally. I just went red, the coming of spring, and I like to experiment with my hair. I change it all the time. I tell everyone I'm a natural redhead now.

Tell me about your approach today. I dress for my day. If I'm not going to do much on a day, I may just wear workout clothes—but with a great coat. It always looks good.
So what are you wearing today? Well, the shoes are New Balance by Ganni. I don't remember the socks. The pants are… oh, I forget her name. It's Bettina something, and she's a New York designer. And this shirt I got at Dover Street—I don't even know what it is! Isn’t that terrible? Oh, and this bracelet is from Marni.

Walk me through your outfit today. The top is Dries and the pants are Dries. Chanel belt, Prada boots. This is a vintage Céline bag, from Phoebe's era.
How do you approach dressing every day? My everyday is usually jeans, a T-shirt, and a blazer. But you know, this is fun. I stepped it up. I live on the Upper West Side, where … well, let’s just say we don't dress like this.
Are you a big Dries fan? Oh, I’ve loved Dries for a million years, since he was first sold at Barneys. And I like the new guy, too. Julien.
Your jewelry is sick. OK, so this cuff is vintage Elsa Peretti, and this is the [Tiffany & Co.] Bone Ring they brought back last year. This one is for my family — it's Zemmel branding in the middle and then all of our initials, my husband and my three kids. This was my engagement ring, and I had it reset years ago. And a classic Cartier watch. And my sister, who was an art advisor—she passed away, but this is her favorite color. And these ladybugs —this one is her flying away, and that one is me staying.
That's very sweet. I love it, I love these stories. I don't do tattoos. I do jewelry.

Tell me about what you're wearing today. So the jacket is Mugler. The hoodie is from a KORN concert I went to in London. I'm wearing Allsaints leggings that I turned into a top, the red pants are from a jumpsuit from some Brazilian brand—I didn't like the top, so I cut it off and made them pants. And the skirt is from Aritzia.
OK, Mugler! I actually did a Mugler takeover for Vogue, and they sent me this.
What's your general approach to style? I'm a very method dresser. I love a theme. I get dressed up for whatever I'm doing that day. Except today I woke up when I was supposed to leave the house, so I just put on all of the clothes that were on my couch. And I was like, "Oh, it's red. Oh, it's black. Okay. I'm putting it together. I'm going outside." And then my raincoat, because I thought it was going to rain today.
Are you a big red person generally? It depends on the weather and my mood. But I've been in the spring melancholy, so I've been wearing a lot of blacks and reds.
Oh, we're sad about spring? Well, it's a season of transitions. And I don't like changing, and everything's happening so fast.
What sign are you? Pisces. So, you know. Emotional, sensitive.

Name: Hillary Lincoln
Occupation: Nurse and fashion and art lover
What kind of nurse? I work in the PACU, so recovery nursing.
Do you watch The Pitt? Yes, I do, and it's oddly realistic.
What are you wearing today? So this dress is vintage Comme des Garçons, Junya Watanabe. I got it in Seoul, Korea. And this is just a little bomber jacket, a vintage Prada purse you can make into a clutch, and some gardening clogs. I got this ring from Rio.
What's your approach to dressing outside of scrubs? I love to mix and match. I knew this dress was a little bit more dressy, so I paired it down with just a windbreaker and the clogs. I love pattern, color, texture—just mixing and matching. I love vintage designer. I've been trying to build my collection up over the years. But anytime I travel, I love to source different pieces that I probably wouldn't find here in the US, or at least, for the price. I like pieces that you don't see every day, and then just pairing it back with pieces that are a little bit simpler. But, usually, I need to have one standout piece when getting dressed, and then I work around that.
The Junya is really fab. Yeah, and you can unbutton it and roll it down, or wear it off the shoulder. It can be a few different things.
And you've got great hair. I think the messier look also adds a little bit to the style as well. So you don't always look so polished—you add some texture and, just, a vibe. I think in the spring and summer,, it's just nice to have braids in.
Plus, I'm sure you have to have it pulled back for work. Totally. It's nice when you're actually a real human, being outside of work, to show who you are.

You really stand out against the other gallerists! I love wearing color in any context. I do a lot of these fairs, and I travel a lot, so I have my formulas that work. A suit—a well-tailored suit—always works. And then you can play with color, you can play with pattern, you can play with texture.
Do you wear suits often back home? Oh yeah, I wear a lot of suits. Velvet, checked. I love suits.
Where's this one from? It's from a brand called Essential Antwerp. It's a Dutch brand, and the shoes are Manolos. And the shirt is a Brazilian brand that's hand-embroidered. My partner gave it to me.
You've got some great jewelry, too. This ring was my mother's. I've got something from Burma.
On an average day when you go to the gallery, what are you wearing? Loafers, a T-shirt, and jeans.

What are you wearing? These shorts are vintage—I got them in Paris. The jacket is J.Crew and I don't know where the blouse is from. This necklace is designed by my late uncle. He was an Italian shoe designer, and then he started doing jewelry later in his career. He used to design for Todd Oldham and Tod’s.
What was your thinking when you were getting ready today? I find New York is not such a colorful place. It's very monochromatic. So I tend to lean towards that when I come. Whereas in London, you'll find me wearing more colors.

Name: Alice Thembi
Occupation: Artist
Homebase: Cape Town, South Africa
What's your general approach to style? I think all of the elements really have to balance each other. And when I say that, I don't necessarily mean in terms of color or even texture. So I like, like, lady and grit mixed together. Or my look is like a little granny, but there's some side-boob. I love wearing a silk skirt, but then I haven't shaved my legs correctly. I'm very obsessed with Victorian and Edwardian jewelry, and then I found these gloves for $30 on a Facebook group from some woman in Idaho. This top is from a brand I found in Thailand, and then the boots are Our Legacy. I think about things practically, too—like I want practical boots and I know Germans made really practical things.
I think there's a real shift to not being so perfect. Put makeup on, but mess it up a bit. More lifelike. Oh, and then my Chanel bag is a little more glam — it pulls in the chaos.
Where's the skirt from? It's old Zac Posen. But it has a rip, but I like it like that. I've had it since I was 16 — and I'm 32 now.
