cAfter what felt like a lifetime of waiting, pop star Dua Lipa finally unveiled her wedding dress this weekend. Despite speculation that it would be designed by one of her close friends, Simon Porte Jacquemus or Donatella Versace, it was actually Chanel who had the honour, with the gown being Matthieu Blazy’s first bespoke wedding dress since joining the house.
Featuring a backless design and a mermaid-shaped skirt, plus elaborate beading and bejewelled drapery at the base of the back, it’s sure to go down in fashion history alongside other well-known Chanel wedding dresses. Dua is now part of an exclusive club of brides, including these famous women.
Sofia Richie Grainge wore three different Chanel dresses across her wedding weekend in 2023, all designed by then creative director, Virginie Viard. For her rehearsal dinner, she wore a high-neck, long-sleeve beaded gown. Then, for her wedding day, she first wore a floor-length, criss-cross neck dress, which featured floral and heart embroidery in ivory sequins. Finally, she changed into a structured mini, which featured the house’s signature camellia on it. Speaking to Vogue at the time, she explained: “I always had this vision of the big princess dress, and going big, but as I got older, I realised that I wanted something a bit more simple… maybe ‘simple’ isn’t the right word, because my dress definitely is not simple!”
As the face of the brand’s Chanel Coco Mademoiselle fragrance since 2007, it was a no-brainer for actor Keira Knightley to choose the brand for her South of France wedding to The Klaxons frontman James Righton back in 2013. Eschewing tradition, she opted for a simple Chanel mini dress with a tulle skirt that she had worn previously, accessorising with a floral head garland, a Chanel wool jacket, sunglasses and ballerina flats. Even more rock‘n’roll? She kept her hair loose and unstyled and her make-up minimal. “I’d worn the dress lots, it was my something old,” she told The Telegraph of her decision. “I just wanted to be in something I would have a great time in again.” And she has, having been spotted wearing it since.

She was pregnant at the time, so Lagerfeld designed a classic lace gown that would skim her bump, featuring a long skirt and lace sleeves, with a retro, Juliet cap veil to finish.

Rather than traditional ivory, her delicate draped chiffon gown was dyed to match her skin tone, and she wore a suitably flamboyant feathered head piece by milliner Philip Treacy. In an even more fashionable touch, Naomi Campbell played maid of honour.

For her church ceremony at St Paul’s Church in Westminster, she chose a long, beaded gown with floral details and cap sleeves, similar to another previously worn by Blake Lively to the Green Lantern movie premiere. What’s more, she became one of the first A-list brides to wear a transformable dress, as she removed the long skirt overlay in the evening for the Chiltern Firehouse party. In a sweet twist, Poppy’s younger sister and fellow model Cara was the Chanel couture bride three years later in 2014.

So it was perhaps unsurprising that she chose to wear a dress designed by Karl Lagerfeld for her wedding to Fritz von Westenholz in 2013. With the nuptials taking place in an Austrian castle, the dress was suitably romantic, with an off-the-shoulder design, huge balloon sleeves and a dramatic long train.
