There’s no getting around it… weddings can cost a lot of money. Prices can easily jump by thousands (or hundreds of thousands) of dollars once you start factoring in lavish locations, higher guest counts, additional events, and working with luxury vendors. To-be-weds are often in the dark about the real cost of weddings when they start the planning process, and are easily taken aback by the steep fees that come with saying “I do.” But the budget of an event doesn’t have to dictate its beauty—some of our favorite weddings we have featured on Vogue have cost well below $100,000, even as others run into the millions.

There is a long overdue need for greater price transparency in the wedding space—especially as many couples find themselves overwhelmed and over budget as they craft their special day. To help give you a little insight into what weddings actually cost, we asked former couples who have had their weddings featured in Vogue over the last two years to anonymously reveal their real wedding budgets and reflect on the money they spent. From their thorough spreadsheets, we pulled out some key details to show just what it costs to celebrate in style.

This couple began wedding planning with a clear idea of their budget and vision. But even though they have connections to the wedding industry through their work, they were met with a wake-up call at their first planner interview. “They were very stern and upfront about what our vision would actually require, and at the time, I found their reaction a little off-putting,” says one of the couple. “Looking back, though, I understand—and luckily we ended up with a planner who was willing to work with us and let the budget evolve as we made decisions and understood our priorities more clearly.”

Two priorities when it came to the budget for the couple were photography and entertainment. “I knew exactly how I wanted the day to be captured and what photo style I was after,” says one member of the couple. An expense that added up more than expected was lighting. “I genuinely did not even know lighting was going to be its own line item, let alone one of the larger ones. I had no idea how much it contributed to the overall design and feeling of the room, but once I saw it come together, I understood,” they share. Luckily, thanks to their industry connections, they were able to reduce spend slightly with a few gifted items.

Reflecting on the weekend, the couple says it was all worth it: “It was incredibly special to throw such a fun, meaningful party for our loved ones. It was the first time in decades that some of our family members had all been together, and sadly, the last time for a few as well. We would never trade those memories.”

A Coastal Celebration in New England

This couple says they knew little about the costs of wedding services going into the planning process. “It was all surprising in a way, but we accepted the costs for what they were,” shares one member of the couple. “We felt confident in the choices we made, and we were willing to pay these professionals for their skills and what they’d proven to deliver based on their portfolios. Safe to say, we were extremely happy in the end and felt our team had gone above and beyond for us.” The pair admits they weren’t strict with their budget, but did have an idea they wouldn’t be entering into seven-figure territory based on guest count and venue.

Fashion was one dedicated spot of investment for the bride. “This was a self-expressive creative project where bespoke was the route I felt most called to across my looks. I wanted to make pieces that felt more like art and would become heirlooms,” she says. One surprise that added to the bill was the rise of tariffs in 2025. “There were surprise costs being passed to me as the consumer that I had not foreseen going into the process, working with artisans and designers overseas,” she says.

Florals were also an element the couple didn’t want to skimp on. “We wanted our design to be rooted in nature, and florals were going to drive so much of our atmosphere,” they say. Above all, the pair wanted to be good hosts for the weekend, covering the costs of food and lodging for their guests. “It was our privilege to host them for a weekend, and we wanted people to feel cared for,” they say.

A Lavish Wedding Weekend in Tuscany

While this couple shares they weren’t strict with their wedding budget, they admit, “We initially wanted to spend $700 to 800,000.” While there weren’t too many surprises with their budget, as their wedding planner gave the pair a good overview before starting the process, one member of the couple remembers a particularly shocking ticket item: “Transportation costs are very expensive in Italy.”

The duo made sure to pull out the stops for entertainment, as well as great food and wine given they were in Tuscany. Investing in accommodations was one of the biggest priorities for the couple as well. “We subsidized 70% of the hotel costs for guests,” they share. When asked if the cost was worth it, they give a resounding: “Absolutely!” They add, “Looking back, though, I think I could have cut back on flowers.”

An Intimate Wedding in Canada

“The whole planning process was a fine balance between budget and the right aesthetics and theming,” shares the couple behind this Canadian wedding. “We also knew that making this a weekend event would raise costs, but we still managed to keep things within range.” Building out a good team was essential to having it all come together within their budget. “Working with our wonderful planner who’s local to the area helped iron out many details that we would not have been able to achieve out of town,” they say.

“A lot of our work was trial and error,” shares a member of the couple. The biggest element of their financial commitment was the destination. “Our connection to the area made it a non-negotiable. Then, we went off from there, just keeping the budget as low as possible.”

A Stylish Wedding Near Cape Cod

When asked if this couple went into wedding planning with a strict budget, the pair notes they did—yet they felt the cost quickly surpassed their expectations. “I feel complicated about answering this question because I do feel like we put too much trust into our wedding planner to honor our budget, and she didn't,” says one of the couple. “We both work full-time and hired someone in hopes of relieving some of our stress. In some ways, it did; in others, it added to it.”

While the couple admits they were passionate about investing in florals, a great DJ, and a wonderful photographer, not all of the price tags felt worth it. Those costs that were surprising? They reply, “Most of them—tent rentals; the price of additional restrooms if you get married outdoors or at the site with a septic system; the way separate events are priced; a scam goddess wedding planner...”

Reflecting on their wedding, one of the couple shares, “It was incredible having so many of our friends and family together from all over the world! But I’m not convinced the wedding tax on everything is worth it. I’ll never forget our wedding—and I also didn’t need to spend that much money to show how much my partner and I love each other.” They add, “We were lucky to have some family support, but I would never advise anyone to go into debt or spend more than they have on a wedding.”

A Backyard Wedding in France

This wedding in France was held in a church and a family backyard that was transformed for the celebration. The creative couple attributes their lower budget to their community of friends and family, who helped contribute to the day. Some items were offered at a discounted rate, while other items were gifted. “We had the privilege of working with two fashion houses to make our dress and suit, and we involved everyone who was a specialist around us to do something,” shares one of the couple. “We are super grateful to all for this, and it added a very touching aspect to the day.”

In total, the couple had €25,000 gifted from their parents to cover costs, while they paid for the rest. Originally, they hoped to spend €30,000 max. “We really tried to limit wherever we could. But we understood it was unrealistic, so the ‘budget cap’ was €40,000,” they say. Their biggest cost was catering, which attributed to half their wedding budget. “We wanted to make sure guests would eat well, and we wanted a nice table,” says the marrier. “I think it was totally worth it.”

A Wedding Weekend in Portugal

When approaching their three-day celebration in Portugal, this couple went in with a goal to spend $100,000. Their biggest investment? Making sure it was beautifully shot. “Photography was definitely somewhere I was willing to spend more because it’s the only thing, physically, that you take away from your day,” says one of the couple. “This was super important to me.” One place they were surprised by costs was lighting, acoustics, and sound. “It was all surprising to me as I hadn’t factored that in. All of the little details and little things also add up if you don’t pay attention,” they share.

The current global economy also hit their pockets a bit harder since the wedding took place in Europe and they were paying in American dollars. “The unfortunate decline of the dollar had to be factored in as the euro was so much stronger,” says the marrier. “This was an unfortunate surprise.” They also had to consider taxes abroad. “The VAT was a big factor, too, because it’s 23%. So we had to work with vendors to pay cash for some things to avoid it,” they add.

As a whole, the couple is happy with what they spent on their celebration. “I think our wedding cost was definitely worth it and incredible what we could do with our budget,” they reflect. “We wouldn’t change a thing—we loved it so much and felt it was quite cost appropriate outside of the photography.”
