Each season, one defining trend inevitably takes over the Vogue offices. (No small feat, I might add.) Last year, for instance, nearly every editor could be spotted in slim retro sneakers from Dries Van Noten or Adidas x Wales Bonner. Then, later in the fall, the same could be said for sumptuous suede jackets from Staud and Rùadh, which topped many a fashion week look—Vogue Shopping’s own Madeline Fass and Lisa Aiken included.
For summer 2026, there’s no question what’s dominating the cubicle conversation: the sarong-skirt trend. The traditional beachwear staple broke into the mainstream—and straight onto city streets—following its appearance at Dries Van Noten’s spring/summer 2026 menswear show in Paris. Of its debut and subsequent rise to sartorial fame, Vogue’s global director of Vogue Runway and Vogue Business, Nicole Phelps, remarked: “Days after Julian Klausner’s Dries Van Noten men’s show in June, sarongs were trending in the Vogue offices,” she said. “It was summer, yes. Still, we were miles from a beach or the idea of a vacation, and there they were: with pants underneath or without, lifted straight off the runway and into the real lives of the young people who populate One World Trade Center.” We even made the Dries sarong the star of our recently launched Resort Wear Shop, styled below with a simple white tank, pair of strappy black sandals, and an embellished cropped jacket.

With Klausner leading the charge, other summer-in-the-city sarongs we love include those from Matteau, Joseph, and even Khaite. The latter looks especially good layered atop a pair of printed drawstring pants and finished with a simple butter yellow tee and raffia bag. Pareos from Loewe and Faithfull the Brand are also perfect for poolside-to-pavement dressing–no swimsuit required.
Still intimidated? A sarong layer over pants, à la Dries or Staud, is probably your easiest entry point, as chances are you’ll be able to recreate the look with pieces already in your wardrobe, plus it’s a more practical approach for late-spring’s in-between temperatures. But when summer officially hits, why not try a printed one with a lace-trimmed cami, heeled sandal, and shell-embellished necklace for your chicest cocktail hour look yet.

Take a styling cue from Vogue’s resident maximalist Naomi Elizée and layer your printed pareo over a pair of simple black trousers and a breezy striped button-up. Inject the look with color and playfulness via Dragon Diffusion’s woven handbag in cherry red, then complement it with Ancient Greek Sandals’s two-toned flip-flops and Lizzie Fortunato’s pendant cord necklace.

Polka-dot dresses aren’t the only printed pieces on our wish list this summer. Matteau’s red-and-white spotted sarong is pure fun, styled best with Tory Burch’s knit one-piece for a swimsuit-inspired look and feel, Acne Studios’s roomy blouson, and a pair of vibrant yellow flip-flops from Miu Miu. Finish the look with Staud’s beaded bag and Anni Lu’s shell necklace.
