Jennifer Lopez Dips Into Versace’s Archives—and She’s Not...
Christian Allaire · 2026-05-28 · via Vogue

If Jennifer Lopez is going to do one thing on a red carpet, it’s give us a gown. (Or, to quote our dearly departed Aretha Franklin: “Great gowns, beautiful gowns.”)

Last night, the star hit the premiere of her new rom-com film Office Romance in Los Angeles, co-starring Brett Goldstein and Amy Sedaris—and she chose a striking vintage number for her saunter down the step and repeat. Instead of rocking a brand-new custom creation, J.Lo chose an archival Atelier Versace dress from the label’s spring 2004 couture collection. The intricate laser-cutting, crystal embellishments, and full skirt? It felt just as fitting for a 2026 premiere today.

Lopez is a longtime wearer of Versace, of course—hello, her 2000 Grammys dress!—so it’s no surprise that she and her stylists, Rob Zangardi and Mariel Haenn, have unfettered access into the Italian label’s archives. Still, it was an intriguing choice to revive such a throwback frock, given the brand is currently in between head designers. (Donatella Versace is now an “ambassador” for the house, while its last chief creative officer, Dario Vitale, left his post in December.) With no new-new Versace to pull from, it makes sense that A-listers are digging into the past. J.Lo isn’t the only one.

This year, stars like Miley Cyrus, Blake Lively, and Anne Hathaway have all revived vintage Versace numbers on the red carpet—pointing to a growing movement that, yes, it’s bound to be a hot Versace summer. Most recently, Cyrus received her Hollywood Walk of Fame star this month, wearing a strappy, bondage-inspired gown from Atelier Versace’s fall 2015 collection. While that show was only a decade ago, finding such a specific 2010s piece was clearly intentional and purposeful. And she made the vampy design look good. (Siri: Cue Cyrus’s “Walk of Fame.”)

At the 2026 Met Gala earlier this month, Lively also revived an Atelier Versace gown. Her pastel dress with a sweeping 13-foot train, from the spring 2006 collection, was much more ethereal and romantic compared to the racier gowns worn by Cyrus and Lopez—a Versace woman, after all, contains multitudes. “Because the theme is based in art, I wanted to wear an archival piece,” Lively told Vogue the day of the Met Gala. “Clothing really is a canvas, and it tells a story, so to be able to pull from a piece that has its own history and has stood the test of time, felt special.”

Meanwhile, during Hathaway’s incredible The Devil Wears Prada 2 press tour last month, the star also could not help bringing back an early-Versace piece—hers from the Gianni Versace era, circa fall 1991. The black, long-sleeved blazer-dress came with big gold buttons, and it was precisely the kind of piece you would come to expect from Gianni: Sexy and unapologetically bold. Over 30 years later, it also felt surprisingly modern, and very fitting for a high-fashion movie’s press tour.

With such a goldmine of treasures in its vault, one wonders if celebrities (and their stylists) are specifically coming to Versace to loan these priceless items—or if they’re finding them secondhand from specialty vintage dealers. The mechanics of top-tier stars battling out for that one rare Versace dress is fascinating. Regardless of how they’re getting their hands on them, though, one thing is for sure: The alluring appeal of vintage Versace is not dying down anytime soon. In fact, it’s only getting even more coveted. So if you’ve been stalking that one 2000s Versace thing on eBay, go ahead and just click “Buy” now—before J.Lo herself outbids you.
