Olivia Wilde’s third directorial effort, The Invite, arrives in theaters later this week, and to mark the occasion, she joined Chloe in the studio for this Thursday’s episode of The Run-Through. The movie, a remake of the 2020 Spanish-language film The People Upstairs, tells the story of a couple who invite their neighbors over for dinner—after which hijinks ensue. (Will McCormack and Rashida Jones adapted the screenplay.)

Olivia and Chloe begin with a discussion about motherhood and work: the filmmaker and actor describes her children as being extremely influential on her process. “They really feel like they have a strong handle on, like, the marketplace,” she reports with a laugh.

They then dig into both The Invite and Olivia’s upcoming appearance as an artist and dominatrix in Gregg Araki’s I Want Your Sex, written by longtime Vogue sex columnist Karley Sciortino. The latter film centers on a rather transgressive May-December romance—Olivia plays a woman who becomes sexually involved with a much younger man, played by Cooper Hoffman—and when asked if she drew at all from personal experience in the role, Olivia explains: “I think that experiencing the double standards firsthand has been fascinating from an anthropological standpoint. And it is so much more egregious than I think I ever really thought. People have such a double standard about what we allow women to do in this world when it comes to romance.”

Also on today’s episode, Chloe and Chioma chat about Chioma’s new newsletter, Nnadi by Nature; Coco Gauff’s Miu Miu x New Balance collaboration; and the launch of Vogue àt la Mode, our limited-edition custom flavor at Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream on the Lower East Side.
