Last night, Tyla took to the 2026 FIFA World Cup opening ceremony stage to sing her home country South Africa’s national anthem. Flanked by the Mzansi Youth Choir, the Johannesburg born-and-raised artist delivered a powerful rendition of the song to the thousands-strong crowd. A proud girl from Jo’burg, Tyla just had to imbue her signature, high-octane style of glam with a nod to her nationality.
Her nails were done by Coca Michelle, a celebrity nail artist who often works with Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, and Tyla (peep the “She Did It Again” video and her Met Gala appearances), as well as being an OPI global ambassador. The fresh set were an elongated almond shape with a gleaming white polish. On the flip side, a detailed rendering of the South African flag.

Michelle painted her elongated almond set a glossy white, handpainting the underside in the colors of the South African flag.
When Tyla was shooting content for her last album rollout, Michelle created several nail concepts. “Her World Cup nail look was inspired by one of the designs that wasn’t ultimately used,” she shares with Vogue. “She ended up bringing the concept back into conversation when we were ideating the nail look for this event, and the occasion felt like the perfect fit.”
The white manicure is “clean and effortless,” describes Michelle, “but the hand-painted South African flag on the underside of each nail adds a unique and meaningful touch. The design reflects Tyla’s heritage in a subtle yet impactful way, making it especially fitting for the FIFA World Cup opening ceremony, where national pride and flags take center stage.”

Michelle began creating the nails the night before Tyla left for her performance. She removed her previous nails and applied a fresh set using OPI GELevate System and GELevate Soft Gel Tips in Almond. “They are the perfect length for her,” she says.
“I painted the flags on the front of the nail to slightly above the free edge and blended the edges to ensure that after I painted the white on top, it did not leave the cuticle area too thick or the nail looking uneven from the coats of polish from the nail design.” For the top of the nail, she used OPI GelColor in Alpine Snow. Shades used for the flag included OPI GelColor in Alpine Snow, Black Onyx, Rated Pea-G, Big Apple Red, Sea-ze the Day, and Exotic Birds Do Not Tweet. “As the nail is clear, the art ends up showing on the underside of the nail.”
Her South African set were just the tip of her soccer-loving, summery look. Tyla also worked with makeup artist Adam Blends on her poreless complexion, adding a warm pink, blooming blush and highlight dusted on the bridge of her nose and high cheekbones. The looked was finished off with a sharp set of brows and glossy pink lip sculpted precisely with an espresso-colored lipliner.

As per Misner, she and Trigg conceptualized the idea around a white dress with South African flag details, building on Misner’s signature style to create a halterneck design with the colors bordering her shape and falling into a warped hoop skirt. “The whole dress was made from silk and fully corseted,” shares Misner—you’ll see her work on everyone from Vogue brides to Lena Dunham. It was a quick turnaround: “These things always are.”
We’ll next see Tyla when she performs in Los Angeles for the next opening ceremony alongside Katy Perry, Future, Lisa and Anitta. Expect more national pride-ful beauty details coming our way from Jozi’s popiano princess.
