You heard it here first, fashion folks: The wedge sandal, a once divisive shoe, is back and it’s feeling undeniably fresh. Contemporary resort brands like Le Monde Béryl, St. Agni, Maryam Nassir Zadeh, and Emme Parsons have all put their minimalist twist on the shape, upgrading it for spring and summer.

With sandal season (almost) in full swing, the wedge has versatility to go around. It’s not quite as high as a proper heel, offering a few welcome inches while still staying super comfortable—a more practical option for those of us walking around the city.

A number of celebrities and models have already embraced the look—last year we saw both Simone Ashley and Alex Consani step out in a black pairs while out and about during the Cannes Film Festival. Back in New York City, Dakota Johnson slipped into some sculptural Khaite wedges with jeans and a leather jacket for a press tour outing while promoting her film, Materialists.

Straying ever so slightly from the cork wedge of the early aughts, new wedges can be found in a variety of materials from supple suedes, to metallic leather, to shiny PVC. Pair Coperni’s hit flip flop style or Khaite’s sculptural shape with trendy capri pants or pared-down wardrobe essentials.
