Better Sleep in the Summer Really Could Be as Simple as S...

Summer bedding may seem like something you don’t actually need, but hear us out. Pop culture paints a rosy picture of summer nights—hello, Grease!—but on a Monday evening in the middle of August, you likely aren’t having a late-night adventure with a hapless, handsome crush. You’re likely blasting the air conditioning, kicking your heavy comforter off your bed, and cursing the 90-degree weather outside. But an AC doesn’t have to be your only line of defense against crushing temperatures.

“Changing your sheets is the quickest and easiest way to freshen up your bedroom,” says Vicki Fulop, cofounder of Brooklinen. “Switching up your bedding can be a really powerful ritual as you transition into new seasons—like a mood change, of sorts.” While winter calls for cozier materials, like a sateen or twill weave, your summertime bedding comes with a different set of rules. “You want something light and airy, that not only keeps you cool, but also evokes the playful mood and spirit of the season,” Fulop continues.

With a sound night’s sleep on our minds, we pulled together an edit of all the essentials—from sheets to quilts to, yes, lightweight duvets—for a summer bedding refresh. (Scroll to the end for more tips on freshening up your space for the season from Fulop.)

Linen Sheet Sets

The best thing about linen: It only gets better with age. This material is naturally thermo-regulating to keep hot sleepers cool on warm nights, and the lived-in look—you know, like they just came out of the dryer—is actually quite chic. Pick an earthy color, like chocolate brown or moss green, or go classic with Parachute and Tuft & Needle’s clean white sets.

Lightweight Duvets

If you need to have a cushy top layer no matter the season, a lightweight duvet offers just enough warmth without weighing down your sleep. From airy natural fills to temperature-regulating designs, these picks are tailored for hot sleepers and summer nights.

Cool Duvet Covers

Once you have the insert, it’s time to consider the cover. Duvet covers made of linen, percale cotton, and bamboo offer cooling properties that help keep the nighttime sweats away. If you prefer the polished look of sateen to linen, Cozy Earth’s silvery, viscose-from-bamboo topper brings that sheen without the heaviness.

Charming Quilts

Sometimes, it really is as simple as swapping out the accents: A heirloom-level patterned quilt can completely change the look of a room. From traditional floral motifs to more understated designs, like Zara’s white bedspread with its embroidered geometric print, there are so many ways to switch up your bedroom’s style.
