“Flowers are delicate and beautiful, so it’s no surprise that people love them around their house, on their clothing, or as nail art,” says celebrity and Chanel nail artist Betina R. Goldstein. “As we see flowers blooming around us in nature, I believe it inspires us to embrace warmer weather.”
There’s a practicality to it. Among the many nail art designs, flower nails are accessible to everyone and can be custom-made however you want. “Floral designs are easy to DIY at home,” agrees celebrity nail artist Queenie Nguyen. “It's also easy to request in salons with the versatility of many color combinations.”
For this summer, celebrity nail artist Mo Qin predicts crystal, cat-eye, and pastel floral designs will be trending everywhere. Goldstein likes drawing her favorite flowers, peonies, tulips, or poppies for her designs and opts for classic colors such as pink, lavender, yellow, and pops of green. Can you do floral nail designs at home?
Absolutely. Qin says you can create simple floral nail designs at home with just a few tools: a base coat, nail polish (gel or non-gel), top coat, and a dotting tool. Nguyen agrees and recommends having a dotting tool and a good painting brush to draw on your flowers. Goldstein agrees and suggests her Doublemoss Arte brushes, which come in different bristle lengths and angles depending on what kind of detail you need.
To start, Qin says you’ll want to apply a base coat followed by your background color. Goldstein says that a nail polish with strong pigment, like the Chanel Le Vernis Longwear Nail Colour, will go a long way in getting vibrant and crisp colors. Let it dry completely and then use a dotting tool (or the end of a bobby pin, says Qin) to place five dots in a circle for the flower petals. Then add a small dot in the center with a contrasting color and repeat on the other nails before sealing with a glossy top coat.

Qin says that the biggest differences are texture and dimension. 3D acrylic flowers, says Qin, are sculpted by hand using acrylic powder and liquid monomer. “The petals are raised off the nail and have real depth,” she says. “You can feel the flower when you touch it.” She says this will give you a more luxe, high-fashion look and requires more skill and time to create.
2D gel is painted flat onto the nail using gel polish or paint. She says this will sit almost flush with the nail surface and allows for very detailed shading and more realistic flower paintings. This is for more practical, everyday wear and is usually faster to create.
What nail shape is best for flower designs?
You can wear a flower design on any nail, but Qin says that most clients will benefit from medium-length almond nails. “They provide enough room for detailed artwork while keeping the overall look elegant and wearable,” she says.
For 3D acrylic flowers, she says, consider long coffin nails to give you the most space to showcase the design.

Qin says it all depends on the look you’re trying to achieve. She says milky white is always a good default choice because it makes the flower colors look bright and fresh.
