Can you feel that? Lady Gaga is stirring up some fashion mayhem.

Yesterday, at The Grove in Los Angeles, Gaga paid homage to her late friend Alexander McQueen at the world premiere of Mayhem Requiem—a recording of her no-phones-allowed performance at the Wiltern. The singer graced the rose petal-strewn black carpet in an operatic gown from McQueen’s fall 1997 couture collection for Givenchy, “Eclect Dissect.”

Gaga opted for a matador-esque dress inspired by the Spanish bullfighters’ traditional traje de luces—a red and black silk satin gown replete with open, lace-trimmed sleeves, a rhinestoned mock neck, tasseled epaulettes, and a flared skirt with a layer of black lace sitting atop the red silk.

As if the dress itself wasn’t a statement enough, Gaga dialed up the theatricality with a netted veil and a black lace fan—not to mention the troupe of white-clad posse of dancers clutching roses at her side.

While McQueen’s Givenchy tenure is a celebrity favorite, his fall 1997 couture collection is particularly popular. At the 2024 Academy Museum Gala, Kaia Gerber celebrated fashion and film in McQueen’s take on Audrey Hepburn’s My Fair Lady dress; At the 2025 SAG Awards, Cynthia Erivo chose a silver woven raffia gown with a fringed collar and wide sleeves.

The fall 1997 couture collection, as McQueen told Numéro in a 2002 interview, borrowed from Japanese, Scottish, and Spanish culture. “[My] idea was this mad scientist who cut all these women up and mixed them all back together,’ McQueen said. While Lady Gaga, Kaia Gerber, and Cynthia Erivo’s looks hailed from various cultural inspirations, they’re all bound by the late designer’s sense of grandeur.
