Hoyeon has already lived plenty of lives in the spotlight—rising from a top runway model (and Vogue cover star), to a full-on TV star (you may have caught her in Squid Game or Disclaimer). But now, the South Korean star is ready to move into the next exciting phase of her career: Movie star.
For this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Hoyeon attended the photo call and screening for her new, Na Hong-jin-directed thriller Hope, in which she stars alongside Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander. “I’m just so excited and grateful to have the opportunity to present my new film at such a global festival,” says Hoyeon. “alongside audiences from all over the world who truly love cinema.”
In Hope, Hoyeon portrays Sung-ae, a rookie cop who teams up with a police chief (Hwang Jung-min) to defeat a mysterious monster wreaking havoc on a South Korean village. “Working on Hope is one of the experiences I feel most attached to,” says Hoyeon of the new acting challenge. “I dedicated a lot of time and effort to preparing for this character—probably the most preparation I’ve ever done in my career.”

Though Hyeon is no stranger to an action sequence—having famously fought for her life as Kang Sae-byeok in Squid Game—she admits that her training for Hope took things to a whole new level. (Being an action star, it turns out, is no small feat.) “To perform the action scenes in the film, I spent about five to six months training before shooting began,” says Hoyeon. “I went through physical training, firearms training, earned a manual driving license, and learned various car action techniques. Because I performed most of the action scenes myself. I hope audiences can truly feel the tension, energy, and sincerity I brought to the role.”
One of her favorite memories from set? Filming an intensive action sequence involving driving a high-speed car, a scene that required her to overcome a major mental hurdle. “I felt a lot of pressure and anxiety about whether I could really pull it off,” says Hoyeon. “Several crew members kept giving me notes about safety checks and technical details, so my head became crowded with too much information, and I started losing focus. But then Hwang Jung-min, who was sitting in the passenger seat next to me, simply said, ‘Just trust yourself.’ The moment he said that, it was like magic—suddenly my mind became completely clear.” (Fun fact: They ended up getting the scene on the very first take.)

For the film’s big photo call and premiere in Cannes this weekend, meanwhile, Hoyeon wanted to deliver a different kind of thrill on the red carpet: Some fashion action. She leaned into looks by Louis Vuitton—she is a face for the label—to find moments that were classic yet modern.
Hoyeon kicked things off with the film’s splashy evening premiere, slipping into Vuitton’s gray slip dress embroidered with silver-hued glass floral embroideries. “I wanted the outfit to encapsulate understated glamour, movement, and quiet strength, while still feeling artistic and cinematic for the occasion,” says Hoyeon. “What I loved most was the contrast within the dress—the fitted high bodice sculpted the silhouette, before opening into an asymmetric gathered seam that transformed the minimal shape into something much more dramatic. The embroidery was also incredibly special: The dress constantly caught the light and felt alive in motion.”
The following day, Hoyeon switched things up for the movie’s daytime photo call. The star went more casual-chic for that outing, sporting a cream knit top-and-skirt set from Vuitton’s fall 2026 collection, paired with sleek leather black knee boots. “I honestly fell in love with it the moment I saw it,” says Hoyeon. “The look really reminded me of the spirit of the ’60s—there was something very youthful, cinematic, and effortlessly cool about it.”

Playing dress-up was certainly a fun element of the festival, but Hoyeon also enjoyed some of the sightseeing and networking she got to do while in town. Some of her personal off-duty highlights? “I got to spend some time walking along the beachside in Cannes, which was really beautiful,” she says. “The weather was amazing, so it was nice to just take everything in and enjoy the atmosphere.” The best moments came when she was taking in such views with some of her Hope co-stars and crew. “I had lunch with the team at La Môme Plage, which was such a lovely experience,” says Hoyeon. “Their frozen fruit dessert was especially memorable—it was so refreshing and delicious. You should definitely try it if you get the chance!” (Twist our arms.)
Up next, meanwhile, Hoyeon will be continuing her movie star era— with two more film projects soon coming to the screen. “There are currently two films in post-production, and I’m not sure exactly when they’ll be released yet, but I’m really looking forward to meeting audiences as soon as possible,” says Hoyeon. For now, however, her focus remains on Hope, which releases in theaters sometime in the fall. “I think I’ll be spending a lot of time on the promotional tour, meeting audiences around the world,” says Hoyeon. “I’m very excited for what’s ahead.”
