Brightening, Concealing, and Hydrating—Tinted Eye Creams Do It All
Audrey Noble · 2026-05-07 · via Vogue

We all know to keep a good eye cream in our routine—if something can help depuff those undereye bags or brighten those dark circles, we’re all for it. But what if there was a way to treat those skin concerns while also acting as a concealer? The tinted eye cream makes the clever case for best of both worlds.

This shift from conventional eye products speaks to everyone’s need—and love—for products that can do many things at once. “Consumers are looking for multi-tasking hybrid products that provide a hint of color as well as skincare benefits,” agrees Ron Robinson, cosmetic chemist and founder of BeautyStat. Aptly named, Robinson explains that tinted eye creams are basically skincare for the eyes that also contain some sort of tint or pigment. Jane Yoo, MD, New York City-based board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon says that the tint usually provides that immediate gratification of improvement to the undereye area, camouflaging those visible concerns (e.g. hyperpigmentation, dull complexion, etc.) while the active skin-care ingredients work to treat them for the long term.

“So while the eye cream can help with hydration, de-puffing, smoothing, and brightening, the tint can help to neutralize the appearance of dark circles, brighten any shadows and make the under eye area appear more rested and calm,” says Dr. Yoo. “This duality allows for increased adherence as consumers can see products that have a visible result in the mirror right after application.”

The best tinted eye creams, she goes on to say, come with known brightening, hydrating, and smoothing ingredients such as caffeine, niacinamide, peptides, ceramides, and retinol. She also recommends looking for anti-inflammatory ingredients like tranexamic acid to help with hyperpigmentation and notes that many tinted eye creams come with SPF to give the eye area needed sun protection. Plus, stay on the look out for formulas which contain iron oxides or mineral pigments, as Dr. Yoo says those will give you instant color correction and brightening.

Using one is simple. In general, Robinson says that it should be applied to clean skin right before your moisturizer. Dr. Yoo agrees and says to think of a tinted eye cream as the last skin-care step for your eyes. If it happens to have SPF, then you apply it after a moisturizer so that you don’t dilute the SPF in it, she says.

And application technique does matter. “Lympathic drainage of the preorbital areas flows medially, so gentle patting this direction (lateral to medial) can actually support drainage and reduce puffiness accumulation,” she says.

So if this has piqued your interest and you’re looking to add a tinted eye cream into your rotation, we rounded up the best ones below.

Best Overall: YSE Beauty Wide Awake Brightening Eye Cream

YSE Beauty

Wide Awake Brightening Eye Cream

  • Why We Love It: Perfect for brightening the eye area and depuffing those undereye bags, this eye cream uses vitamin C, niacinamide, and caffeine to even out any discoloration and reduce puffiness. Marisa Garshick, MD, board-certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology, also likes this tinted eye cream for its hydrating properties, as it uses squalane to nourish and soothe the skin.
  • Editor’s Experience: “The tinted eye cream that put the category on the map for me, YSE’s Wide Awake does just that. With its lightweight, serum-gel texture, this glides onto the undereyes to depuff, brighten, and smooth. Available in three shades, the tint delivers fair coverage—excellent worn on its own or under makeup.” —Kiana Murden, beauty editor, shopping

  • Why We Love It: We’re team sunscreen for your eyes and strongly believe everyone should be too. Both Dr. Yoo and Dr. Garshick agree and recommend this tinted eye cream to protect the sensitive eye area from the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays. “The fact that this product contains tinted iron oxides means that it is essential for those who are concerned about hyperpigmentation as it helps prevent future dark spots,” adds Dr. Yoo. Dr. Garshick adds that it also contains peptides and hyaluronic acid to give the skin some added hydration, and has a metal applicator to give you a nice cooling effect to help with any puffiness.
  • Key Ingredients: Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, Peptides, Hyaluronic Acid
  • Shades: 4

Everything You Need to Know

What are the downsides of tinted eye creams?

Risks are minimal; but as with anything new you’re introducing into your routine, there are a few things to take note of. Dr. Yoo says that those with very sensitive or eczema-prone eyelids may have a reaction to brightening actives that are known to sting. You’ll also want to be extra careful if the tinted eye cream contains other strong active ingredients, fragrances, and preservatives, as those may cause an allergic reaction or contact dermatitis. Thicker formulations may also cause milia (a.k.a. those tiny white cysts full of keratin) under the eye area. To be safe, always do a patch test before going anywhere near your eyes.

Dr. Garshick adds that some tinted eye creams may only have a limited shade range that won’t match all skin tones. If you’re looking for a true concealer, this might not be the product for you.

How We Tested

When we test and review a product, we take a holistic approach to deliver well-rounded product recommendations. First, we lean on Vogue's vast network of experts—from board-certified dermatologists to celebrity estheticians—to gain professional acumen on the industry's standout products, ones these specialists would actually use on their clients. We pair their expertise with our editorial best practices to curate the thoughtful edits you read on our site.

As it relates to tinted eye creams, we selected the best based on the following characteristics: ingredients, shades, texture, application, finish, and the skin-care concerns they address. To do this, we paired our own personal tests of each formula with expert guidance and reviewer insights to determine which we would recommend to you.
