Surprise! Dua Lipa and Callum Turner are wed. Not a surprise? Her cool-girl wedding attire.
The couple was officially married in a civil ceremony at London’s Old Marylebone Town Hall on Sunday, May 31. Stepping out on the town hall steps to showers of confetti, the pop star wore custom Schiaparelli couture, designed by Daniel Roseberry: a tailored ivory blazer with a nipped-in waist and sharply tailored silhouette, affixed with personalized gold bijoux buttons, and a matching asymmetric skirt that featured a sculpted bustier trimmed in white lace. She also wore white gloves and Christian Louboutin pumps with lion-eye detailing, a glittering Bulgari serpent necklace, and a Stephen Jones-designed wide-brimmed hat lined in gold leaf.

Immediately, it’s a statement bridal style that calls to mind the original cool-girl bride: Bianca Jagger. Almost 55 years ago, Bianca—then Bianca Pérez-Mora Macías—wed Rolling Stones star Mick Jagger in a Saint-Tropez-set wedding on May 12, 1971. The Nicaraguan socialite opted for a creamy Yves Saint Laurent Le Smoking jacket and bias-cut long skirt, paired with a floppy sunhat and veil, blocky peep-toe heels on her feet. She wore the suit sans blouse with one button done up. It was a look that would go down in bridal history.
The Le Smoking jacket would become an oft-referenced classic. When Bianca wore it, it had only debuted four years earlier on the runway, and was a controversial look for women at the time as the first tuxedo designed for women. A brave and bold choice for a bride, it was also a moment that spoke to an approaching, newly liberated era for women—socially and sartorially. And across the decades, while bridal trends have come and gone, Bianca’s skirt suit has remained a frequent reference for brides hoping to sidestep tradition while still looking elegant and timeless.

From Amal Clooney’s Stella McCartney ivory trouser suit for her own civil wedding in 2014, to Solange’s Stéphane Rolland-designed caped jumpsuit that same year, many celebrity women across the spectrum of chicness and personal style have given their own spin on the bridal suit.
Other celebrity brides of recent have both embraced and resisted bridal traditions: Charli XCX opted for a form-fitting, new-classic Vivienne Westwood gown to wed George Daniel in her own London town hall nuptials, while Maya Hawke wore a custom white Prada gown with a striking feathery coat, and Venus Williams gathered a line-up of 12 different gowns across her week-long celebrations.
In Dua Lipa’s case, the choice of a Schiaparelli skirt suit oscillates elegantly between the nostalgic and the fresh: an homage to a classic, elevated by Schiaparelli’s bold and playful details.
It’s rumored that Lipa and her now-husband Turner will head to Italy soon for a second multi-day wedding event in Palermo, Scily. Will it be longtime designer friends Donatella Versace or Simon Porte Jacquemus designing her second wedding look? A presto!
