“Ozzie is truly one of a kind, and his passion for baseball and the White Sox is unmatched. Ozzie’s knowledge of the game, combined with his energy and ability to motivate his teams, helped deliver a World Series Championship to White Sox fans and the city of Chicago after an 88-year drought,” Reinsdorf said.

“The number 13 has always belonged to Ozzie in the hearts of our fans, and this season, we wanted to make it official by retiring his number. Like many of the White Sox legends, there will never be another 13.”

“I was very surprised – very, very surprised,” Guillen said. “They did it the right way, I guess. They made me cry. I didn’t even cry for anything, you know, much. Because I know how this moment is so important for my family, myself – that shows you or that shows myself the White Sox organization care [about] what I did for them.”

From Rookie to Champion

Guillen’s story with the White Sox began in 1985, when the Venezuelan-born shortstop quickly made his mark by earning American League Rookie of the Year honors. Known for his defensive brilliance and relentless energy, he became a fixture in Chicago’s infield for over a decade.

His accolades during his playing career include three All-Star selections and a Gold Glove award. Guillen built a steady offensive resume to complement his glove, batting .265 with 1,608 hits, while contributing 24 home runs and 619 RBIs during his time on the South Side.

Guillen became manager in 2004, and reached heights that forever altered the trajectory of the franchise. In 2005, he guided the White Sox to a historic World Series title – their first in 88 years. That team dominated from start to finish, winning 99 regular-season games and storming through the postseason with an 11-1 record.

Under Guillen’s leadership, the team played with confidence and edge. His willingness to trust his players and make bold decisions paid off in unforgettable fashion, including a stretch of four consecutive complete games in the American League Championship Series. It remains one of the most remarkable postseason runs in modern baseball.

According to AP News, from 2004-2011, Guillen’s managerial record was 678-617.
