Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Dončić reacts during a game as his recovery timeline continues to evolve ahead of a potential second-round series.

The Los Angeles Lakers have a shifting outlook on Luka Dončić’s return timeline — and the latest update suggests a more nuanced path than previously believed.

Speaking on SportsCenter earlier this week, ESPN insider Shams Charania said the expectation around the Lakers was that Dončić would be out for a potential second-round series entirely if the team advanced.

“It is a slow-path on the recovery front for Luka,” Charania said on SportsCenter on Tuesday. “The expectation is if the Lakers are able to beat Houston and advance, Luka Dončić will be out for the next series.”

But less than 24 hours later, Charania provided a subtle — yet significant — update on NBA Today.

Luka Dončić Injury Timeline Shifts After New Update

Charania indicated that Dončić is now expected to miss the start of the next round, rather than the entire series — a shift that leaves the door open for a possible return later on.

“One source told me this week that Luka Dončić is on the slow path on his recovery in that Grade 2 hamstring strain rehabilitation,” Charania reported. “The expectation around the Lakers is, if they are able to advance to face Oklahoma City in the second round, Luka Dončić will be out at the start of that series.”

The distinction is critical.

While the Lakers still do not expect Dončić to be ready when the next round begins, the updated framing suggests his absence may not extend through the entire series — a more optimistic outlook than previously reported.

Lakers Star Still Not Near Full Basketball Activity

Despite the improved outlook, Dončić remains in the early stages of his recovery progression.

“There’s still no clarity on the timetable for him,” Charania added. “He is starting some on-court movement. He’s continuing to improve on that. There’s still some ways to go, though, for him to have a full ramp-up of basketball activities.”

That means key recovery benchmarks — including full-speed movement and contact drills — have not yet been reached.

Lakers Preparing for Thunder Series Without Dončić Early

If the Lakers advance, a likely matchup with the Oklahoma City Thunder would begin without Dončić.

That presents a significant challenge against a team led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the reigning MVP and one of the league’s most dynamic scorers.

However, the possibility of Dončić returning later in the series — even in a limited role — could dramatically shift the balance.

Luka Dončić’s Impact Still Looms Over Playoff Run

Even while sidelined, Dončić’s presence continues to shape the Lakers’ postseason outlook.

Despite missing the final stretch of the regular season, he secured the NBA scoring title with 2,143 total points, averaging 33.5 points, 8.3 assists and 7.7 rebounds. He became the first Lakers player to win the scoring crown since Kobe Bryant in the 2006-07 season.

For now, the Lakers are proceeding with caution.

Hamstring injuries — particularly Grade 2 strains — require careful management, and any setback could reset the timeline entirely.

But the latest update has changed the conversation.

Dončić may not be ready when the next round begins — yet for the first time, there is a growing possibility he could return before it ends.
