LeBron James on his playoffs future

The Los Angeles Lakers took firm control of their first-round playoff series with a 101-94 win over the Houston Rockets in Game 2 on Tuesday night. The victory gave Los Angeles a 2-0 lead as the series shifts to Houston, continuing a strong start despite the absence of Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.

LeBron James led the Lakers with 28 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, delivering another complete performance while handling increased responsibilities. Marcus Smart added 25 points, and Luke Kennard contributed 23 as Los Angeles relied on depth and execution to secure the win.

After the game, James addressed his approach to the postseason, offering a candid reflection on where he stands at this stage of his career.

Speaking after Game 2, James acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding how many playoff opportunities he has left.

“I’m living in the moment, I guess. I don’t know how many more opportunities I get to play in postseason in my career,” James said.

He continued by emphasizing his long-standing connection to playoff basketball.

“So, but, I live for the postseason. Been doing this in 21, my first postseason game was 21. Mm-hm. So 20 years. I know I missed it a couple times, but from that moment at 21, That first game I made my mark and for 20 years I’ve been thinking about the postseason. So I don’t shy away from it.”

The comments came after another high-level performance in a playoff setting where James has consistently produced throughout his career. At 41, he remains the focal point for Los Angeles, particularly with key scorers unavailable.

His Game 2 effort included 14 points in the fourth quarter, helping the Lakers maintain their lead during Houston’s late push.

The game followed a similar pattern to the series opener, with the Lakers responding to early deficits and maintaining composure during key stretches.

Houston took an early lead in the first quarter, but Los Angeles closed on a 9-0 run to move ahead 33-26. The Lakers extended the margin to 46-31 before the Rockets answered with a 17-3 run to cut the deficit to one point before halftime.

Kevin Durant, returning after missing Game 1, scored 20 of his 23 points in the first half. However, he was limited to just three points after halftime and finished with nine turnovers.

The third quarter proved decisive. After Houston briefly took the lead, the Lakers responded with a 13-4 run, highlighted by a reverse dunk from James, to regain control at 67-59. Los Angeles carried that momentum into the fourth quarter, leading 75-68 entering the final period.

The Rockets made one last push, trimming the deficit to 85-82 on a three-pointer from Josh Okogie. That would be as close as they would get.

A late turnover by Durant led to a James dunk with under a minute remaining, extending the lead and helping seal the win. Kennard closed the game from the free-throw line.

Alperen Sengun recorded 20 points and 11 rebounds for Houston, while Jabari Smith Jr. added 18 points and Amen Thompson finished with 16 points and nine assists.

Despite those contributions, the Rockets struggled offensively in the second half and were unable to match the Lakers’ execution late in the game.

Los Angeles now holds a 2-0 series lead heading into Game 3 in Houston. With James continuing to anchor the team and reflect on the significance of each postseason opportunity, the Lakers have positioned themselves strongly early in the series.
