Warriors reveal exactly how they plan to sign LeBron James

The Golden State Warriors enter the offseason after their season ended with a 111-96 play-in loss to the Phoenix Suns on Friday night. With Stephen Curry still leading the franchise at age 38, attention has quickly shifted toward how Golden State plans to improve its roster for another title push.

One of the biggest names linked to the Warriors is Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James. According to Sam Amick of The Athletic, team sources say Golden State has a serious interest in James this summer. Nick Friedell and Marcus Thompson II of The Athletic also outlined the financial paths available if the Warriors decide to pursue the four-time MVP.

That matters because James has not announced any decision on retirement or his future with the Lakers. A possible partnership between James and Curry has long been discussed around the league. With Golden State now eliminated, the organization’s options to chase another star are under immediate focus.

The Warriors do not have a realistic route to major cap space. “The best they can likely do to pursue James through true free agency is the projected $15 million non-taxpayer midlevel exception,” according to The Athletic.

Using that exception would come with restrictions. Friedell and Thompson wrote that Golden State would become hard-capped at the first apron, projected at $209 million. They added that it would likely require Kristaps Porzingis leaving and/or Jimmy Butler being traded.

Another option would be the taxpayer midlevel exception, projected at $6.1 million. That scenario would require James to accept a salary much closer to the minimum than his usual market value.

The Athletic also noted a sign-and-trade remains possible. In that case, the Lakers would need to agree to cooperate on the move. Golden State would still face first-apron hard-cap restrictions, and outgoing salaries would need to match league trade rules.

Those pathways show why any pursuit of James would require significant financial adjustments from both the Warriors and the player.

James remains one of the league’s most important offseason storylines. Sam Amick wrote, “James has made no decisions regarding his future; that retirement remains a real possibility.”

If James decides to continue playing, several factors could shape his next move. James has family ties in Los Angeles, where he has lived since joining the Lakers in 2018. His son, Bronny James, is also under contract with the Lakers.

At the same time, rival teams continue to monitor whether James would consider another move late in his career. Golden State’s interest is notable because it would unite two defining players of the era in James and Curry.

The Warriors must also weigh roster-building priorities beyond one move. Friedell and Thompson wrote that one team source cautioned that the organization does not plan to trade multiple future assets simply to add more veterans.

Golden State still holds all of its first-round picks, giving the front office flexibility this summer. But the team must balance long-term assets with Curry’s remaining window of opportunity.

The Warriors were also linked in recent reports to stars such as Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kawhi Leonard, meaning James is not their only possible target. Still, his availability would likely command immediate attention if he reached the market.

For now, Golden State’s season is over, and the Lakers are preparing for their first-round series against the Houston Rockets. But with the offseason beginning for the Warriors, the path to a James pursuit is already clearer: limited cap tools, possible trades, and a major decision still to come from LeBron James himself.
