The Los Angeles Lakers will not have to solve Kevin Durant in Game 5.

Durant has been ruled out for the Houston Rockets’ elimination game against the Lakers, giving Los Angeles a significant break before Wednesday night’s matchup at Crypto.com Arena. The Lakers lead the first-round series 3-1 and can advance with one more win.

The Rockets star has been dealing with a sprained left ankle and bone bruise, an injury that has already forced him to miss multiple games in the series. NBA.com reported that Durant did not practice Tuesday before Houston left for California, though he was seen running on an anti-gravity treadmill as part of his recovery work. Rockets coach Ime Udoka described Durant as “day to day, game to game,” but added that Durant still needed to get back on the court before returning to action.

That makes the latest Rockets announcement especially important for the Lakers. Houston avoided a sweep with a 115-96 win in Game 4, but trying to extend the series again without Durant is a much different assignment than doing it with one of the NBA’s most efficient late-clock scorers on the floor.

Rockets have ruled Kevin Durant out for Game 5 at Los Angeles

Austin Reaves will be a gametime decision for the Lakers

Kevin Durant’s Absence Changes the Lakers’ Game 5 Math

Durant played in only one game this series, scoring 23 points in 41 minutes during Houston’s Game 2 loss. He injured the ankle late in that game, and the Rockets have had to reshape their offense around Alperen Sengun, Amen Thompson, Reed Sheppard and Jabari Smith Jr. since then.

That group was good enough to punish the Lakers in Game 4. Houston played with more force, defended better and kept its season alive. But Durant’s absence still removes the one Rocket who most naturally bends a playoff defense.

For the Lakers, that matters in several ways.

They can shade more help toward Şengün without worrying about Durant isolating on the weak side. They can switch more aggressively late in the clock without immediately creating a Durant mismatch. They can also defend Houston’s younger scorers with more physicality, knowing the Rockets do not have Durant available to stabilize a cold stretch.

This does not make Game 5 automatic. Houston just proved that. But it does reduce the number of ways the Rockets can win on the road.

Without Durant, Houston likely needs another high-energy, balanced effort and another rough offensive night from the Lakers. With Durant, the Rockets could survive more broken possessions simply because he can create a good shot against almost any coverage.

That is the kind of difference that matters in a closeout game.

Lakers Could Also Get Austin Reaves Back

The Durant news is not the only injury development working in the Lakers’ favor.

Austin Reaves is also pushing toward a return after missing nearly four weeks with a strained oblique. NBA.com reported that Reaves and the Lakers planned to wait until game time Wednesday to determine whether he could play in Game 5. Reaves had been listed as questionable for the previous two games but did not play as Los Angeles split those matchups and took a 3-1 series lead.

That is a meaningful swing for the Lakers if Reaves is cleared.
