Los Angeles Lakers star Bronny James could be back in the rotation tonight versus the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Bronny James appears to have a clearer path back into the Los Angeles Lakers’ playoff rotation before Game 2 against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Lakers coach JJ Redick is expected to use a 9-man rotation with Jarred Vanderbilt out and Luke Kennard available, according to multiple reporters tracking the team’s pregame plans. Law Murray of The Athletic reported that Redick said the Lakers would use a 9-man rotation, with Bronny James, Maxi Kleber and Jaxson Hayes among the possible options for the final spots. Benjamin Royer also noted that Bronny is “likely” back in the rotation for Game 2.

Redick said the Lakers will play at least a 9-man rotation in Game 2.

That is meaningful news for James, who has not had a fixed postseason role. He has appeared in six playoff games this spring, averaging 1.7 points, 1.0 assist and 0.5 rebounds in 6.2 minutes while totaling 37 postseason minutes.

The Lakers do not need Bronny to be a star in this series. They may need him to be playable for a short burst, especially if Redick wants more ball pressure, younger legs and another guard who can survive a few minutes against Oklahoma City’s pace.

Bronny James “Likely” Back to the Rotation, According to Benjamin Royer

Royer’s update matters because Bronny had already slipped out of the group at one point in the postseason. The Lakers played an eight-man rotation earlier in the playoffs without Vanderbilt or Bronny, according to Royer, but the latest Game 2 setup points toward Redick expanding the group again.

Vanderbilt’s absence is part of the opening. Vanderbilt dislocated his right pinkie in Game 1 against Oklahoma City, an injury Redick described as a “freak injury.” The Lakers lost that game 108-90, with LeBron James scoring 27 points while Los Angeles dealt with both Vanderbilt’s injury and Luka Doncic’s absence because of a hamstring issue.

That combination makes the ninth rotation spot more interesting than it would be in a normal playoff game. Vanderbilt gives the Lakers size, rebounding and defensive activity. Bronny cannot replace that profile directly, but he can give Redick a different kind of defensive option on the perimeter.

James’ regular-season NBA numbers remain modest. NBA.com lists him at 2.9 points, 0.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game for the Lakers this season, while ESPN lists him at 40.9% shooting from the field.

But the G League production shows why the Lakers still see developmental value. The NBA G League’s official stats page lists Bronny at 15.6 points, 3.1 rebounds and 3.6 assists for South Bay this season.

That is the gap the Lakers are trying to bridge: Bronny has been more assertive and productive with South Bay, but his NBA role is still situational.

Is Luka Doncic Playing Tonight? No, and That’s Partially Why Bronny James Is

Game 2 is not technically a must-win for the Lakers, but it is close to the kind of game that can define a series, especially with Doncic still out due to a hamstring injury.

Los Angeles already dropped Game 1 in Oklahoma City, and the Thunder’s speed, depth and defensive pressure present a very different challenge than a normal regular-season matchup. Reuters reported that the Lakers advanced to face Oklahoma City after beating the Houston Rockets in six games, with LeBron James leading Los Angeles in the clincher.

The problem is that the Thunder can force Redick into difficult choices. A shorter rotation protects the Lakers from putting less experienced players in high-leverage spots, but it also risks wearing down the core. A longer rotation gives Los Angeles more energy, but only if the ninth man holds up defensively and avoids mistakes.

That is where Bronny’s possible role becomes practical rather than sentimental. If he plays, it will likely be in a narrow assignment: defend, move the ball, avoid turnovers, take open shots and give the Lakers a few stable minutes while the main guards rest.

For a player who has spent most of his young NBA career fighting for small opportunities, that is still significant.

Bronny James’s NBA Career Has Had Ups and Downs

Bronny’s path to this point has never been simple.

In July 2023, while he was at USC, James suffered cardiac arrest during a basketball workout. NBA.com later reported that the likely cause was a congenital heart defect, according to a family spokesperson. He was eventually cleared to return to basketball, and Reuters reported in May 2024 that a panel of NBA physicians medically cleared him to be drafted and play in the league.

That context matters because Bronny’s career is often judged only through the lens of his famous last name. The fuller picture is more complicated. He lost crucial development time before his freshman season at USC, entered the NBA as a second-round pick, moved between the Lakers and South Bay, and has had to earn trust in a franchise that is trying to win immediately.

The Lakers selected James with the No. 55 pick in the 2024 NBA draft. He is listed at 6-foot-2 and 210 pounds, with one year of NBA experience.

But the latest rotation news gives James something real: a chance.
