Luka Doncic or Reaves not expected to return at any point during the first round.

The Los Angeles Lakers are entering the 2026 NBA Playoffs with growing uncertainty after injuries to Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves cast a shadow over their first-round matchup against the Houston Rockets. Both players suffered injuries in an April 2 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, and their availability remains unclear as the postseason begins.

The Lakers secured the No. 4 seed after finishing the regular season strong, but their outlook has shifted significantly. According to Dave McMenamin of ESPN, the team has “no expectation of having either Doncic or Reaves back at any point in the first round.” However, there remains a possibility that one or both could become available if the series extends deeper. That uncertainty places added pressure on LeBron James and the remaining roster to keep the season alive.

“And as they prepare for it, sources told ESPN they have no expectation of having either Doncic or Reaves back at any point in the first round. But

The injuries come at a critical time for Los Angeles. Doncic was the team’s leading scorer, averaging 33.5 points along with 8.3 assists and 7.7 rebounds in 64 games. Reaves emerged as a key secondary option, averaging 23.3 points per game. Together, they formed a productive trio with James that powered the Lakers during a late-season surge.

That momentum was evident during a 16-2 stretch from late February through early April, when the Lakers climbed the standings and improved on both ends of the floor. Their offense rose into the top tier of the league, while their defense also showed significant improvement. But the loss in Oklahoma City abruptly halted that progress.

Doncic suffered a Grade 2 hamstring strain during the Thunder game, an injury that typically requires multiple weeks of recovery and carries a risk of reinjury. Reaves, meanwhile, was diagnosed with a Grade 2 oblique strain shortly after, with a similar recovery timeline.

McMenamin reported that the Lakers quickly began preparing for an extended stretch without both players. Initial optimism around Reaves returning before the end of the regular season faded after further evaluation confirmed the severity of his injury.

“They’re out indefinitely,” Redick said (via ESPN). “I’m not going to have an update for you this week. They’re out indefinitely.”

The timing has complicated the Lakers’ playoff plans. Even though the team finished 53-29 and secured home-court advantage, the absence of their top two perimeter creators leaves a significant gap in scoring and playmaking.

Head coach JJ Redick acknowledged the challenge ahead while emphasizing the team’s mindset entering the series. “Our job… we’re going after the No. 3 seed and we’re going to try to win a playoff series,” Redick said earlier in April, reflecting the group’s focus despite the setbacks.

With Doncic and Reaves sidelined, the responsibility shifts to James, who remains the focal point of the offense at age 41. Following the injuries, he elevated his production, averaging 24.0 points, 9.7 assists, and 6.0 rebounds during the final stretch of the regular season, earning Western Conference Player of the Week honors.

The Lakers also adjusted roles across the roster. Players like Rui Hachimura and Luke Kennard saw increased opportunities, while the coaching staff emphasized ball movement and defensive consistency to compensate for the missing stars.

Despite the challenges, Los Angeles closed the regular season with three straight wins, stabilizing their position heading into the playoffs. Their defense improved further, and their three-point shooting efficiency rose during that span, offering some optimism.

Still, the matchup against Houston presents a difficult test. The Rockets enter the series healthy and feature a strong defensive unit alongside scoring options led by Kevin Durant.

For the Lakers, the path forward depends on sustaining their level of play without two key contributors. While the possibility of a late-series return remains open, the immediate focus is on extending the series long enough to create that opportunity.

Until then, the burden remains on James and a reshaped supporting cast to navigate one of the most challenging scenarios of their season.
