A new Luka Doncic return date may be hidden in an ESPN report, sparking fresh speculation about his Lakers playoff comeback.

NBA superstar Luka Doncic remains out for the Los Angeles Lakers, as the team announced his grade 2 hamstring injury will sideline him once again for their upcoming Game 4 matchup against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Doncic has been out for more than five weeks with the injury and has yet to suit up for the Lakers in the playoffs so far. Since he’s been out, questions like ‘Is Luka Doncic playing tonight?’ and ‘When is Luka Doncic coming back?’ have been top of mind for both the Los Angeles franchise and their fanbase as they now face a 0-3 series deficit against the defending champion Thunder.

With the Lakers’ season on the brink of ending, a Doncic injury return still feels far away. Still, until Los Angeles is eliminated, the Slovenian star coming back can’t be 100% ruled out, so here’s what we know based on the latest Doncic injury updates and a potential return at some point in this Lakers postseason campaign.

Is Luka Doncic Playing Tonight?

No, Doncic is not playing tonight as he was ruled out for the Lakers vs Thunder Game 4 by the team. He is the only player listed on the injury report for Los Angeles as he remains out with a grade 2 hamstring injury.

Doncic has held the same ‘out’ injury designation since he was first sidelined with the leg issue. His teammate, Austin Reaves, suffered an oblique injury during that same game, but he’s since returned.

The Lakers have also had a couple of other players listed on the injury report, but heading into Game 4 against Oklahoma City, Doncic is the only player who will be wearing street clothes on Monday night.

When Is Luka Doncic Coming Back?

GettyLOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA – MARCH 31: Luka Doncic #77 of the Los Angeles Lakers makes a slam dunk against the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second half at Crypto.com Arena on March 31, 2026 in Los Angeles, California.

The question of when Doncic is coming back is a bit trickier than the previous one.

Officially, there is no Doncic return timeline that has been offered up by the Lakers since he was first sidelined. However, when recently speaking to the media, the star himself offered a bleak outlook on what doctors told him when he went down with the hamstring injury in early April.

During that press availability, Doncic revealed that it was actually an eight-week recovery process for the injury, rather than the four-to-six week timeline that was first reported and circulated.

That eight-week timeline would line up right around the 2026 NBA Finals, meaning the Lakers would have to come back down 0-3 against the Thunder and also win the Western Conference Finals to have the chance to see Doncic return.

Additionally, as has been the case for the past few weeks, NBA insiders and analysts have offered very similar updates and return timelines for the superstar. All have said that Doncic is not expected back for the Lakers vs Thunder series, and going forward, an actual date to see him get back on the court remains undetermined.

However, when asked about when they expected to see Doncic return, NBA reporters Tim McMahon and Tim Bontemps of ESPN’s The Hoop Collective podcast gave blunt responses.

“October,” Bontemps said. “I also understand why he’s saying (the eight-week timeline) now, because (the Lakers) are drawing dead anyway, and he shouldn’t be rushing back and trying to play right now.”

“We’ll see you next season, bud,” McMahon said about a Doncic return. “Training camp.”

Others like Shams Charania, Brian Windhorst, Dave McMenamin, and Dan Woike, all who prominently cover the Lakers, have offered similar thoughts and updates on Doncic, all but confirming he is out for the rest of the season.

In first comments since his injury, Luka Dončić said doctors told him he’d be out 8 weeks with Grade 2 hamstring strain, a timetable that would keep him out against OKC in the second round

There was previously hope Doncic could return in the Lakers’ previous series against the Houston Rockets or around right now against Oklahoma City, but in the time since, the outlook on his recovery and subsequent return have only gone downhill.

Where The Lakers Sit Before Game 4 Vs Thunder

The Lakers are down 0-3 against the Thunder, and are heading into Game 4 in Los Angeles on Monday as underdogs once again, as they continue to play without Doncic.

With a loss, the Lakers will be swept, and their 2025-26 NBA season will be over.

Through league history, no team has ever come back from a 0-3 deficit. LeBron James and others have won series while down 3-1, but facing a three-game deficit, the Lakers are on the bad side of history.

Los Angeles can still extend their series against Oklahoma City with a Game 4 win, but it doesn’t guarantee they’ll advance or see Doncic return at any point.

With that, the Lakers will soon face a new string of questions and decisions coming in the 2026 offseason, a few of which include James and Reaves’ free agency, as well as how to build a roster around Doncic for the future. Still, those are issues for after they are eliminated, which hasn’t happened quite yet.

In the meantime, the Lakers hope to keep their season alive without their franchise star, as they face the Thunder in Game 4 on Monday, May 11, with tipoff set for 7:30 pm PST in a matchup that will be live on Amazon Prime Video.
