The Los Angeles Lakers announced Jarred Vanderbilt will make a surprising return to play from a finger injury vs. the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Los Angeles Lakers are getting Jarred Vanderbilt back for Game 3 against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Vanderbilt was upgraded to available after dealing with a right finger dislocation, giving head coach JJ Redick another defensive option as the Lakers try to cut into Oklahoma City’s series lead. Multiple reporters at the arena, including Marc Stein, Mike Trudell, Brad Turner, Khobi Price and Thuc Nhi Nguyen, reported shortly before the game that Vanderbilt would be available.

The NBA’s official injury report also confirmed Vanderbilt’s availabilty.

The Lakers returned home trailing the Thunder 2-0 in the second-round playoff series, making Game 3 a pressure point rather than a routine lineup update. Oklahoma City already protected home court, and the Lakers need more two-way depth if they are going to extend the series.

Vanderbilt’s return does not solve every problem for the Lakers, but it does give Redick a player whose value is easiest to see in playoff matchups: defense, physicality, rebounding help and energy possessions.

The Lakers say Jarred Vanderbilt (right finger dislocation) has been upgraded to available for tonight’s Game 3 against Oklahoma City.

Lakers Coach JJ Redick Said Jarred Vanderbilt Is Available vs. Thunder

Vanderbilt’s availability is a notable turnaround after he had previously been listed as questionable for Game 3 with the finger injury. The Lakers’ earlier status report had Vanderbilt questionable and Luka Doncic out, leaving Los Angeles with two major injury-related questions entering the matchup.

Now, Vanderbilt gives the Lakers another body against a Thunder team that has tested their depth. Oklahoma City’s pressure, pace and athleticism have made every rotation decision matter. Even if Vanderbilt is not asked to play heavy minutes, his presence allows Redick to change the look of certain defensive possessions and potentially reduce the strain on the Lakers’ top options.

That is especially important because Vanderbilt does not need touches to impact a game. His role is not to rescue the offense. It is to make the Lakers harder to play against, particularly in stretches where Oklahoma City is forcing turnovers, winning loose balls or getting downhill.

The key question is how much Vanderbilt can realistically give the Lakers after the finger injury. A player can be available without being fully comfortable, and his conditioning, ball security and ability to play through contact will all be worth watching.

Still, for a Lakers team searching for a spark at home, simply having Vanderbilt active is a meaningful piece of good news.

Vanderbilt’s Return Comes With Luka Doncic Still Out

The Lakers’ injury update is also defined by who is not coming back.

Doncic remains out with a left hamstring strain, keeping Los Angeles without one of its most important shot creators. That makes Vanderbilt’s return helpful but not a like-for-like replacement. He strengthens the Lakers’ defense and rotation depth, but he does not replace Doncic’s scoring, passing or late-clock creation.

That contrast is part of why the update matters. Vanderbilt can help the Lakers survive possessions. Doncic is the kind of player who can change the structure of an offense, and the coures of a team’s entire postseason success.

Doncic’s hamstring injury was expected to keep him out until late May, making a return in this series unlikely unless the Lakers extend their postseason run.

That puts more pressure on the available Lakers to find offense collectively. Austin Reaves, LeBron James and the rest of the rotation need to carry more creation responsibility, while role players have to make Oklahoma City pay when the Thunder load up defensively.

Vanderbilt’s return helps most if it creates extra possessions: an offensive rebound, a deflection, a forced miss, a transition chance. Those plays become more valuable when the Lakers are missing a star-level offensive engine.

Lakers-Thunder Game 3 Carries Major Series Stakes

Game 3 is scheduled for Saturday, May 9, at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. The matchup is listed for 8:30 p.m. ET / 5:30 p.m. PT on ABC, with streaming options including NBA League Pass and live TV streaming services that carry ABC.

For the Lakers, the series situation is straightforward. A win brings them back into the matchup. A loss would put them in a 3-0 hole against a Thunder team that has already shown it can overwhelm Los Angeles with depth and pace.

But before Game 3, they at least got one needed piece back.
