Austin Reaves speaks with Lakers coach JJ Redick during a game as his return finally gets a clear path.

The question around Austin Reaves isn’t just whether he’ll be back for Game 5. It’s how much the Los Angeles Lakers will ask of him if he is.

Coach JJ Redick didn’t offer a firm answer Tuesday when asked about a potential minutes restriction.

“That will be based on whether he’s good to go,” Redick said. “We’ll talk through that.”

It was a measured response that underscored the uncertainty still surrounding Reaves’ return from a Grade 2 oblique strain.

Austin Reaves Minutes Plan Remains Fluid

Reaves has missed roughly four weeks, and while he has been trending toward a return, the Lakers have avoided committing to a defined workload.

Redick’s comments suggest the plan could be flexible — shaped not only by medical clearance but by how Reaves looks in real time if he’s available.

The Lakers hold a 3-1 series lead over the Houston Rockets and can close out the series Wednesday night, but the decision on Reaves carries implications beyond a single game.

Reaves’ Production Highlights Challenge of Return

Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves

GettyLuka Doncic and Austin Reaves of the Los Angeles Lakers are one of the best duos in the NBA this season.

Before the injury, Reaves had taken on the secondary scoring and playmaking role behind Luka Doncic.

The 27-year-old guard averaged 23.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.5 assists during the regular season, shooting 49 percent from the field and 36 percent from 3-point range. His ability to handle the ball, create offense and stabilize possessions became a central part of the Lakers’ identity.

That level of production is difficult to replicate immediately after a multi-week layoff, particularly with an injury that affects core strength and balance.

Even if cleared, the expectation is that Reaves may need time to regain rhythm and conditioning.

Possible Role Points to Gradual Reintegration

There is a growing expectation that the Lakers could ease Reaves back into the rotation.

Lakers insider Jovan Buha said earlier this week that Reaves could come off the bench and play in a limited role.

“I do expect him to come off the bench,” Buha said on his Buha’s Block podcast. “And I would expect him to be on some sort of minutes restriction if he is able to return in Game 5.”

That could translate to a shorter stint — potentially in the 18-to-20-minute range — while still allowing him to contribute in key stretches.

Lakers Offense Could Benefit From Reaves’ Return

The need for Reaves was evident in Game 4.

The Lakers’ offense struggled in a 115-96 loss, undone by turnovers and inconsistent ball-handling. LeBron James called his performance “unacceptable” after committing eight turnovers.

Without Reaves, Los Angeles has lacked a steady secondary creator capable of organizing possessions and relieving pressure on James.

Even in a reduced role, Reaves could help stabilize the offense with his decision-making and shot creation.

Game 5 Stakes Add Urgency to Decision

Game 5 is set for Wednesday, April 29 at 7:00 PM PT (10:00 PM ET) on ESPN, with the Los Angeles Lakers holding a 3-1 series lead.

Reaves has indicated he is close.

“I feel good,” he said on Tuesday. “We got a great opportunity tomorrow.”

He added that the final step remains tied to his comfort level physically.

“You have to be comfortable with your body and what you can do… I’m trending towards the right direction.”

That progress leaves the Lakers balancing two priorities: closing out the series and reintegrating one of their most productive players.

Whether Reaves returns in a limited role or without restriction, his presence would give Los Angeles a steadier offensive option at a moment when execution matters most — even if matching his pre-injury impact takes time.
