Luka Doncic’s "Extraordinary Circumstances" challenge delaying the NBA regular season award ballots.

The NBA’s postseason awards process has hit an unusual pause as the league waits for a ruling on Luka Doncic’s eligibility status. With ballots still not distributed to voters, the delay has created uncertainty across multiple award races, including MVP and All-NBA selections.

Doncic, the Los Angeles Lakers star, is at the center of the situation after finishing the regular season with 64 games played, one short of the league’s 65-game requirement. His decision to file an “Extraordinary Circumstances” challenge has effectively held up the voting process, as the league must determine whether he qualifies before ballots can be finalized.

Kon Knueppel’s Rookie of the Year odds fell by 22% after last night’s Play-In Game.

The NBA has still not sent out regular season award ballots due to Luka Dončić’s “Extraordinary Circumstances” challenge.

The timing is significant. Doncic led the NBA in scoring with 33.5 points per game while adding 7.7 rebounds and 8.3 assists, placing him firmly in contention for major honors. His case, however, hinges on whether the league grants an exception tied to specific absences, including time missed for the birth of his child and a late-season hamstring injury.

The NBA’s participation policy requires players to appear in at least 65 games to qualify for awards such as MVP and All-NBA. Doncic fell just short after suffering a Grade 2 hamstring strain in his 64th game, which sidelined him for the remainder of the regular season.

In response, his agent, Bill Duffy, filed an “Extraordinary Circumstances” challenge through the league’s formal process. “Luka has gone to great lengths to show up for his team and this league this season,” Duffy said. “His record-breaking season deserves to be noted in the history books.”

The appeal also highlights two games Doncic missed in early December when he traveled to Slovenia for the birth of his daughter. Under league rules, a player must demonstrate that it was impracticable to participate in those games and that he otherwise would have met the threshold.

The NBA and the National Basketball Players Association will jointly appoint an independent expert to review the case. If approved, Doncic would regain eligibility for all major awards despite finishing below the standard requirement.

Until that decision is made, the league has not sent out official ballots. Voters cannot finalize selections without clarity on whether Doncic should be included in award pools, particularly for All-NBA teams, where his placement could shift multiple candidates.

The delay comes as the Lakers prepare for their first-round playoff series against the Houston Rockets without Doncic available. Head coach JJ Redick confirmed that both Doncic and Austin Reaves are “out indefinitely,” leaving the team without its top two scorers to begin the postseason.

Doncic is currently recovering after undergoing treatment in Spain for his hamstring injury. He is expected to return to Los Angeles for further evaluation, but there is no confirmed timeline for his return to game action.

Despite his absence, Doncic’s regular-season performance remains central to the league’s award discussions. He not only secured the scoring title but also finished among league leaders in assists and overall offensive production.

The uncertainty has ripple effects across the ballot. In one example of how voters are approaching the situation, a published ballot noted that Doncic would be placed on the All-NBA First Team and within the MVP top four if deemed eligible. If not, other players such as Jaylen Brown or Kawhi Leonard would move up.

The broader impact extends beyond individual recognition. The NBA’s awards process is typically finalized shortly after the regular season ends, but this year’s timeline remains open-ended due to the pending ruling.

For now, the league is in a holding pattern. The outcome of Doncic’s challenge will determine not only his own award eligibility but also how the entire postseason honors landscape is shaped.
