The Los Angeles Lakers are staring at elimination after falling into a 2-0 hole against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference semifinals.

Oklahoma City now holds a perfect 6-0 record against Los Angeles this season and has comfortably controlled every matchup so far.

While much of the attention continues to center on Luka Doncic and his availability, focus is also beginning to drift toward the offseason.

As teams exit the postseason and individual performances come under greater scrutiny, speculation is already building around what could become a pivotal summer across the league.

Lakers Could Face Competition for Peyton Watson in Free Agency

One team that could indirectly shape the Lakers’ offseason plans is the Denver Nuggets.

With Los Angeles expected to pursue both center and wing help this summer, ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel has reported that a potential Nuggets roster reshuffle could place several intriguing names on the market.

Aaron Gordon and Cam Johnson have been mentioned by Siegel as possible trade options for the Lakers.

However, restricted free agent Peyton Watson has long been linked with Los Angeles, particularly given the Lakers’ expected cap flexibility.

Still, it appears Denver has little interest in letting the young forward leave easily.

“League sources have told ClutchPoints that after agreeing to a new extension with Nikola Jokic, the Nuggets’ top priority is keeping Watson on the roster,” Siegel wrote.

“In order to do so, the Nuggets will need a chunk of financial flexibility since teams like the Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets could look to sign Watson to an offer sheet and drive up his price for Denver to match in free agency.”

Watson is entering restricted free agency at the conclusion of a four-year, $11.2 million contract that paid him $4.3 million during the 2025-26 season.

The versatile wing is expected to command a major raise, with Siegel placing his next contract somewhere between $24 million and $30 million annually.

Several teams are expected to test Denver with aggressive offer sheets in the hope the Nuggets decline to match.

The Lakers are viewed as one of the franchises that could explore such a move.

However, despite Denver’s financial challenges, it appears increasingly unlikely the organization will allow Watson to leave without a fight.

Peyton Watson Emerging as Intriguing Target

Across 54 regular-season appearances in 2025-26, Watson posted career highs with 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 2.0 combined steals and blocks per game.

He also shot an efficient 49.1% from the field and an impressive 41.1% from three-point range on 3.6 attempts per contest.

Watson last played on April 1 before missing the remainder of the season and playoffs with a right hamstring strain.

The Lakers are expected to enter the offseason with significant financial flexibility, with several contracts potentially coming off the books, including LeBron James’ $52.6 million salary.

That scenario could create more than $50 million in cap space.

ESPN’s Dave McMenamin previously reported that Los Angeles is unlikely to pursue another marquee superstar outside of James, who could still return on a more team-friendly contract.

Instead, the Lakers are expected to focus on retaining important contributors such as Austin Reaves, Luke Kennard, and backup center Jaxson Hayes, while also pursuing complementary additions around the roster.

Siegel has previously reported that he expects “at least one rival team” to aggressively pursue Watson early in free agency in an attempt to pressure Denver financially.

Whether Watson ultimately becomes attainable for Los Angeles remains unclear.

If not, fellow Nuggets players such as Gordon and Johnson could still emerge as realistic Lakers targets this summer.
