ESPN has pinpointed May 9 as Luka Dončić’s likely return date for the Lakers, targeting Game 3 of Round 2.

That date lands on a Saturday at Crypto.com Arena, and it represents a more optimistic forecast than most analysts and medical experts have offered publicly since Dončić suffered a left hamstring injury on April 2. The timing could prove decisive. May 9 would set Dončić’s return as Game 3, the Lakers’ first home game of the series at Crypto.com Arena, a window that could accelerate his comeback if the series tightens early, or force a quicker decision if Los Angeles falls behind 2-0 in Oklahoma City.

Dončić Return Date Surfaces in ESPN Injury Report

The six-time All-Star has been sidelined since he sustained a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, an injury that sports medicine specialist Dr. Jesse Morse said typically requires six to eight weeks for a complete recovery, according to BasketNews. With aggressive rehabilitation, that window can narrow to four to six weeks.

Dončić traveled to Spain for specialized treatment before rejoining the team. As of this week, he had yet to participate in full-speed running or 5-on-5 drills, and the Los Angeles Lakers formally ruled him out for Tuesday’s Game 1 against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

What makes ESPN’s May 9 projection especially notable is how it contrasts with the tone coming from the team and league insiders. While the Lakers have publicly downplayed expectations for an early return, the ESPN timeline quietly points to a much faster ramp-up, one that would put Dončić back on the floor at the most pivotal moment of the series.

“He is not close,” ESPN‘s Brian Windhorst said Monday on the Get Up program. “There is a whole ramp up that’s required from a hamstring, and he has not started that contact ramp up yet. … Do not expect to see Luka in the first few games of this series,” Windhorst added, according to BasketNews.

Lakers Hold Out Hope for Dončić Before Series Shifts Home

Despite the cautious public tone, ESPN’s preview page for the Lakers-Thunder series pinpoints May 9, Game 3, as Dončić’s estimated return date, a designation that stands out against the more cautious framing coming from the team and league insiders.

ESPN‘s Shams Charania had previously described Dončić’s status as week-to-week heading into the series, as noted by Johnny Askounis of Eurohoops. Head coach JJ Redick, asked about Dončić’s status after Sunday’s practice, offered two words: “No update.”

Dr. Morse placed the earliest realistic return at Game 4 on May 11, writing that Dončić should begin progressing to one-on-one drills and partial team practices around May 7, provided his recovery hits its next benchmark without setbacks. Dončić is expected to ramp up his on-court work this week, though no guarantee exists for Games 3 or 4.

Lakers’ Playoff Hopes Hinge on Doncic’s Return

If the Lakers can take at least one of the first two games in Oklahoma City, Dončić’s potential return becomes the defining variable of the series. ESPN‘s Windhorst noted on the Rich Eisen Show that the team’s decision on activating Dončić could come as early as after Game 2, per Hoops Rumors‘ Luke Adams.

“If they go to Oklahoma City and they get walloped in two games, that’ll inform their process. And if they go to OKC and they split … that might inform the process,” Windhorst told Eisen.

Dončić posted 33.5 points, 8.3 assists, and 7.7 rebounds per game this season for Los Angeles. Oklahoma City enters as the defending NBA champion and the No. 1 seed in the West, with a 64-18 regular-season record. The Lakers finished 53-29.

If Dončić does return for Game 3, the entire trajectory of the series could shift overnight. For now, the Lakers’ immediate focus remains surviving the opening stretch in Oklahoma City, a stretch that will determine whether the Slovenian superstar’s return becomes an inspiring comeback story or a last-ditch attempt to save the season.
