Stephen A. Smith sends warning about Jalen Williams injury

The Oklahoma City Thunder moved one step closer to advancing in the playoffs with a 120-107 win over the Phoenix Suns in Game 2, but attention quickly shifted away from the result. Forward Jalen Williams exited in the third quarter with what the team described as a left hamstring issue, casting uncertainty over his availability moving forward.

Williams had been one of Oklahoma City’s most effective players through the opening stretch of the series. He followed a strong Game 1 with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting in Game 2 before leaving the floor. Head coach Mark Daigneault said after the game, “We think he aggravated his left hamstring. We’ll take a look at it in the next couple of days, and we’ll update you guys appropriately.”

The injury comes at a critical time for the Thunder, who hold a 2-0 series lead but are now facing questions about their rotation depth and postseason outlook. The concern has extended beyond the team, with ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith addressing the situation on “First Take”.

Stephen A. Smith highlighted Williams’ importance to the Thunder and raised concerns about the team’s ability to advance without him.

Speaking on ESPN’s First Take, Smith said, “I’m very concerned in regards to your question about Jalen Williams because he’s had a plethora of injuries.”

He pointed to Williams’ injury history, adding, “He’s missed 19 games because of a wrist injury. He’s missed 17 games because of a hamstring injury. He’s missed 11 games because of a thigh injury and obviously two games because of injury management. This brother has missed a lot of games.”

"I'm very concerned. … I don't think you're beating San Antonio without Jalen Williams. I don't know if you'd beat someone like Denver or Minnesota without Jalen Williams."

Smith acknowledged Oklahoma City’s depth but questioned its ceiling without Williams alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

“They still win without him. But I don’t think you beat San Antonio without Jalen Williams. I don’t know if you’d beat somebody like Denver or Minnesota without Jalen Williams,” Smith said.

He emphasized Williams’ role within the team’s structure.

“I think you need him with Shai in order to win,” Smith said. “There’s a reason this brother starts alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander when he’s healthy.”

Smith also referenced Williams’ past performances, stating, “This is a brother that dropped a 40-piece in the NBA Finals… You got to stop talking about him like he’s some ordinary player.”

His comments underline the broader concern that, despite Oklahoma City’s strong start to the series, Williams’ status could significantly influence their postseason trajectory.

Williams’ injury occurred midway through the third quarter when he grabbed his left leg after a fast-break attempt. He signaled toward the bench and later committed a foul to exit the game before heading to the locker room. He did not return.

Daigneault declined to speculate on a timeline for recovery.

“Any assumption about time [missed] is just hypothetical at this point, so I’m not going to comment on that,” he said.

Before the injury, Williams had been playing at a high level. Daigneault said, “I thought he was playing great obviously. He was on the gas. He had great force… he was playing an outstanding game.”

The Thunder still secured a double-digit win behind a strong overall performance. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the team with 37 points, while Oklahoma City continued to capitalize on Phoenix’s struggles. Through two games, the Suns have committed 41 turnovers, which has contributed to the Thunder’s control of the series.

Williams’ postseason had started strongly despite an injury-affected regular season in which he played only 33 games. He missed time recovering from wrist surgery and dealt with multiple hamstring issues earlier in the year.

The Thunder have experience playing without him, going 39-10 during the regular season in his absence. However, his two-way impact and role alongside Gilgeous-Alexander remain central to the team’s lineup when healthy.

Game 3 is scheduled for Saturday in Phoenix. Oklahoma City will await further evaluation results on Williams before determining his availability, with his status now one of the key storylines in the series.
